Having decided to descale our Truma boiler, using the logic that if the small electric kettle we sometime used was caked then perhaps it was time to clean the boiler. There are many threads on the forum about what to use and amongst the many contributors @DBK and @Scotland had provided much useful and practical advice. However I was keen to get a definitive answer from Truma and after a couple of weeks I have!

If you head to the Truma website it will tell you to de-scale as follows:-

For hygienic reasons you should decalcify the water container occasionally. Use special decalcification products from camping specialists or conventional vinegar essence or citric acid, for example. Fill the decalcifying product in the recommended ratio into the appliance via the water system, allow it to work and then rinse the Combi heater thoroughly with fresh water”

Not really a great deal of use, so following an email to Truma I received the following reply which many other people have:-

Please find below instructions for descaling the Truma water heater:
Dilute 2 litres of white wine vinegar into 10/12 litres of fresh water, introduce into your water system via your water inlet, (removing the filter if one is fitted for this process) open the taps to pull through to the heater and then leave the solution in the heater for 4 to 5 hours and then flush through with fresh water”.

After another series of e-mails, I won’t bore you with the details, I have also been provided with the following additional advice concerning the use of Citric acid:

Head office have confirmed the use of citric acid and the ratio they recommend is 1 tablespoon of citric acid to 1 litre of water”.
(Hallelujah at last a mix ratio!)

Now to find a weather windows here in Edinburgh to do this along with a few other jobs!

I always use white wine vinegar about 3 Lt in about 15-20Lt of water. Nice and cheap 30p a litre in France, always bring 6 or more litres back as use it for descaling everything in the house as well.

mix white vinegar 1ltr per 5 ltr water. pump it through hot system till it reaches taps. heat water and allow to cool several times then stand for 12 - 24 hours, boil again and empty down the sink. it will then descale the waste tank
