I have a 2022 Fiat Ducato based A class (Roller Team) which has “Daytime Driving Lights” which are permanently on, but only a row of LED’s on either side at the front. Nothing at the rear.
My question is: Is this normal?
I think there should also be some lights on at the rear but before I pursue this further I would appreciate if other Funsters could let me know what lights are illuminated on their Motorhomes when using “Daytime Driving Lights”.
Thanking you in advance.

Unfortunately this is standard practice amongst manufacturers and is also why we see so many drivers at dusk and poor visibility with no rear lights. the legislators should have included tAil lights in the regs

They are not driving lights they are Daylight Running Lights (DRL) and designed to make it easier for other motorists and pedestrians to see moving vehicles approaching them. You don’t need to see the vehicle after it has passed, you need to see it before you step off a kerb in front of it or before you pull out of a side road. In bad conditions you are expected to turn your headlights on, which also bring on the rear lights and extinguish the DRLs.

Agreed. I'm fed up with seeing drivers at night or in hazardous daytime conditions driving with no rear lights. Volvo had the best idea - automatic DRL at front and back. One hopes for changes to manufacturing standards on this issue, but they take years to implement, so Gooners, what you have is normal I'm afraid.

If you have a car like my Skoda then the lights are fully automatic so when light is poor or after the time they are required by law it puts all the lights on. I can see at a glance during the day whether the DRL are on, on their own, or if the car has detected poorer visibility and put them all on, head dipped beam and rear lights.

My 22 Ducato has DRL that are on all the time and when poor vis etc it puts the full set of lights on. Very handy in Spain for going through tunnels which requires them to be on even if visibility is good. Police are keen on such as that there.

DRL`s are normally front only but for some odd reason they usually put on dash lights so giving people the impression that all lights are on at night:
I don't think dash lights are anything to do with DRL's my car hasn't got DRL's but the lights are on with the ignition.

From a safety aspect I'd also like to be visible from the rear, still can't understand why this was not included in the legislation. I've only ever been hit by one other vehicle, this was on a clear day with good visibility whilst stopped at lights. Rear ended, broken leg and written of motorbike !

DRLs on the front only is crazy legislation. Why would legislation require only the front of the vehicle to be illuminated. It is idiots in bad weather that think they are visible because their dashboard is illuminated and they have DRL's completely ignoring the fact they are virtually invisible from behind.

Idiots will be a danger whatever, no lights when they are needed and then rear fog lights when it is only raining. The idiots would never turn their head lights on if the rear lights illuminated with the DRLs. DRLs at night or in poor conditions could cause dazzle because they don’t dip and are not aimed at the road just like rear fog lights.

One of the worst inventions ever. They should have just done the same as saab and volvo and had the sidelights come on with ignition. Automatic lights should be standard fitment in this day and age .

They now have vehicles that have front drl and the dashboard lights come on with ignition so you have people driving in the dark with no lights on thinking they are on because the drls are lighting the road and the dash is illuminated. I've lost count how many I've been behind with no taillights.

And often if you give them a beep or a wave you get a middle finger in return

We have no DRLs, however in Poland it is a legal requirement to have lights(dipped) at all times.

As our MH turns lights off when ignition is off and vice-versa, I just leave lights selected all the time and do not have to think about changing.

Problem comes when I drive our Honda HR-V, in which one has to select ON/OFF after engine start/stop. Sometimes forget ON, but drivers normally flash one.

I do exactly the same.

I've driven on dipped lights ever since I went to Norway on business for a few weeks in the 80s and really liked the fact that everyone drove with their lights on.

I always did that with my ducatos, I left the sidelights on all the time and they went off with ignition.

However this iveco is weird . If you put sidelights on then they don't go off with ignition, but if you have sidelights and dipped beam on then all go off with ignition. But I don't want to drive with dipped beam on all the time

It's normal, the Brains Trust decided rear DRL's weren't required. I usually drive with my sidelights on so both front & rear are lit.

Driving in daylight with sidelights on is pretty much a waste of time as they are so dim that they do not stand out (5/7 watts DRL initially were 21w (Sweden) and later upto 35w before LED s took over) In foggy conditions particularly the vehicle silhouette appears before sidelights .

I'm sure that the majority of drivers are unaware that DRLs do not operate on the rear or more likely not bothered! The same people like to dazzle us with rear foglights in the rain.
I personally drive on dipped headlights as the fraction of a second earlier that other drivers notice you could be difference between accident or near miss especially in the lanes.

Is it because sidelights may have to be left on depending where the vehicle may be parked (eg on a road with speed limit over 30mph) therefor sidelights can be left on without keys being in ignition…..?🤷🏼‍♂️

Pet hate is driving rain, lots of spray and the number of cars with no lights on except the drl at front.....
Why doesn't it occur to people or put their lights on?
Because they see that their dashboard dials are nicely illuminated and think their lights are on. Stop illuminating dashboards without having your lights on and problem solved.

Then the question has to be asked "what idiot thought that was a good idea?"
just makes people think ,especially at night that there lights are on.

This^^^^^^^^ when driving as soon as I see , especially during the day, someone with lights on I check mine as often on,off,on ,off for tunnel usage

Wish my 2016 dashboard lights lit up on ignition and when the DRL’s are on, I might then be able to see my speed 🤔

If its a Ducato it was part of a recall several years back.

My 2012 German import Hymer exsis -i 562 on a Transit 350 chassis came with the side lights, front and back coming on with ignition. Initially dangerous as the front side lights weren't suitable for driviing, however I changed the front bulbs and now have effective front and rear DLR
