I hadn't heard this before, although I'm sure somebody will have mentioned it previously - apparently dash cams are illegal in Austria, and possibly Portugal?

I saw a recent piece on the subject by 'Honest John' the motoring journalist:

"In Austria, it is illegal to own, let alone use, a dash cam and even first time offenders can be hit with a huge fine of €10,000. Get caught again and it is a €25,000 penalty..."

I thought it was illegal to use a dash cam in Austria .
Wasn't aware it was illegal to own one tho

So Google street maps of Vienna is illegal?

General streets and roads were published years after most European countries, due to legal issues. In July 2018 images from Vienna, Graz, Linz, Wiener Neustadt, Eisenstadt, Baden bei Wien and Salzburg were published, as well as some roads in Vorarlberg and Tirol, and the A2 Graz–Vienna motorway//

My understanding (having just read up on it) is it's illegal without permission... I'd imagine Google had permission.
A Google street map vehicle can hardly be classed as using a dash cam tho ..a separate issue id imagine

There is a roundabout on a duel carriageway with a single lane section that by-passes the roundabout. Now some clever dickies attempt to wiz across the roundabout to get past the traffic on the single lane section putting the traffic on the roundabout in jeopardy. On this occasion I came around the roundabout when this idiot came straight across the roundabout headlights a blazing behind me because I was sticking to the speed limit. OK an everyday occurrence until this halfwit on reaching the duel carriageway again pulled alongside me wound his window down and started screaming at the top of his voice you are on my dash cam:LOL: My lovely lady wound her window down and said if you dont shut you gob I will get out and stuff that dash cam up your jacksy……. …:).
Dash cams give this feeling of superiority to some dim drivers. Good on Austria I think they should be banned here too...(y)

Austria, what utter twaddle - then it must also be illegal to own and record images or video on a digital camera, Go Pro or phone.

I don’t own a dash cam but the rest I’m guilty of, as is most of the human race.
I won’t be whipping out my XT2 in Obergurgl anytime soon.

Ther's another Country to avoide then!

I've said this before in another thread, I've rode to Austria for the last 3 years with a GoPro on my handlebars (due to getting knocked off in Austria in 2013) when visiting "European Bike Week" (google it) there's 1,000's of bikers there with Cameras (either on the bars or on the helmets) and plenty of police there, and I have never seen anyone cautioned for having one.
