I'm a newbie (ISH) 2022( type 2 VW's and caravans 1980 s to 2022)s
Hello,
Our new to us, first motor home (2021); which we have had for only one year, has a problem. We collected it in December 2022. It's just had it's Annual habitation inspection and it's got damp as shown below. The dealer will "repair it" under warranty but has said if the cost is more than £1000 we will have to pay the difference. Having found the previous owners habitation report, there was a crack to the rear bumper, which was replaced. This damage was in the same area as the reported damp. Please can you give us any advice?

So the dealer sold you a damaged/repaired van, and is saying it is your responsibility if the repair cost is over £1,000?
Seems bang out of order, I think either the dealer repairs or small claims court for the cost.

I would ask the dealer for details of what he needs to do.

Decades ago, we had a CI which was damp (wet?) inside . It cost a lot to fix, but we used it dry for years afterwards.

Agree with comments that the dealer should be liable for the total cost.

Where is your water tank? If it isn't water ingress from outside it could be an internal leak in the water system.

If it's a reputable dealer (and there are lots of them about despite what you read on here) and the repair is done properly I wouldn't worry about the future.
I'd bet there are lots of folk who have had similar problems but sorted satisfactorily, you just don't hear about them. Yes, I'm one of them, albeit I fixed it myself.

Thanks for your replies they have been reassuring. The dealer seems to be ok, so far. It's not near a tank. Pam

Sorry to say that £1000 to repair that level of damp is super optimistic, think 3x that as a base figure. Yes it could be bodged by the dealer cheaper, but done properly there are days and days of labour plus the parts. You need to raise your consumer rights with the dealer as there is evidence to show the damage was pre=existing prior to sale. It is down to them or their insurance to correct the fault

I don't see how a rear bumper repair would have any effect on the damp.

The van should have a 5/6 or 10 year water ingress warranty.
As TheBig1 says damp repairs done properly can run into thousands.

If it's more than £1K you pay the difference......that a licence to make money.

Even If the side of the van fell off they are responsible for the FULL cost of repair.
Unless of course, it's a private warranty with a financial limit in the small print.
Personally, as it's where it's been repaired previously, I would ignore it for now and see if it dries out.
