Has anyone ever used one of these to check for dampness and how reliable are they ie what percentage is acceptable

I’ve used one on my firewood, but wouldn’t fancy poking holes in the MoHo cabinetry Steve.
Yeah I would use the pinless version no marks that way, if your van has damp you can usually smell it or see staining.

Just found this on the net.

You should be aware that a moisture reading of 0-15% is quite normal and gives no cause for concern. However, moisture readings in excess of 15% indicate the need for further inspection. Levels between 25-30% indicate that there may be water ingress, meaning that remedial work could be required.

I have a pinless one, do you want me to bring it with me. Hereford or Drax if you want to test.

On a recent thread on this subject I also said to use a pin less one...
However I was informed you will not get a true reading unless you poke holes everywhere.!

No thanks Trevor as I said it’s for a pal, but he assures me he won’t need it as he says if it’s damp he will see it,😮
all you can do is lead the horse to water!

We used one when looking for a caravan. 3 caravans, all looked smart and tidy and didn't smell of damp. 2 of them were off the scale. You don't need to penetrate the wall to get a good reading. I think your friend needs luck on his side if he thinks he will smell it ;)

Is your friend a newbie Steve I can understand his view if he is but if he is a seasoned motorhomer you just wouldn't take the risk would you ?

The damp readings you obtain will depend on the device used. So build up a log of readings around the van. Start at several points where damp is unlikely. They will all be similar. Then use this as a bench mark for checking vulnerable areas, you will soon know when you come across a dodgy area.

The only problem with some non invasive testers is that Aluminium makes them read high, mine reads 30 - 35% when put against dry Aluminium. I recently removed the bottom cover off one of my roof vents and found everything to be totally dry with no sign of damp. I tend to use both if there is any doubt.
