Off to see number one son in north Italy next year and want to know when the ideal time (early as possible ) is to cross and camp on the alps when a) we don’t need to change tyres/ snow chains etc b) when the whole of Europe is not on holiday and c) we can park up for some great star gazing - recommended sites / Aires welcome - probably travelling via the Chunnel tunnel but after that - who knows

We went mid May over on the way to Croatia and there was still a fair bit of snow up in the ski resorts but roads were clear.

Depends on your route, if you haven't got winter certified tyres or carry snow chains or "socks", the earliest you will legally be able to cross the Alps next year will be April 1st.

Ideally in June via Grossglokner strasse, that alpine pass it’s stunning. You can go up and see the glacier , and on the midd pass at 4000m I think, there is a coffe stop with souvenirs, it’s a proper alpine hut. If you get the drone out there, you will be amazed. I did that pass few years ago with a motorbike group on a tour to Croatia.

We tend to always cross on or around 2nd May via Germany, Austria, Italy, and don’t need any special kit but have had snow blocking Brenner Pass once. You’ll need to determine your route before you can get any worthwhile recommendations of places to stop

Difficult to predict especially some of the higher oasses. The Grossglockner was closed due to snow in mid May last time we were in the area.
