Hi
We are thinking of trying Croatia next summer in our motorhome.
Does anybody have an experience of motorhoming there and is it worth what is a good old hike to get there ?
We went as far south as Salzburg this summer and broke the journey up over 6 weeks, so it wasn't an issue and very enjoyable.
Any tips and advice good or bad would be appreciated

Cheers

Yes, we did Croatia this year, and there was a big discussion recently about the area - you should be able find it with the search tool

We stayed at a camp site near Split then got the bus to stay a few nights in Dubrovnic in Airbnb then the fast ferry back to Split.I was worried about insurance in Montenegro.
Also look at Pula,a beautiful ,old Roman city with its ruins inc an Amphitheatre. There is a camp site within walking distance of the centre right on the coast or take the bus.
Camped at Lake Bled on the way down, also Lucerne and Interlaken

Having driven across EU and then down to Dubrovnik we did not wish to return by same route. We booked ship from Dubrovnik to Bari in Italy, from there down the boot and around to catch a ferry to Sicily. Toured round to Palermo and then ship to Naples. Then back up through Austria and up to the ferry home.
It’s a long way to go and I would suggest packing in as much as you can.
Travel well and travel safely. Nothing booked.

Croatia last year was very enjoyable. We went via Slovakia so needed yet another gobox.
Once your in that corner of the Adriatic, the journey times Austria/Italy/Slovakia/Croatia are not that great

We did it a few years ago, the boss enjoyed it, I didn't think much of it.
Beaches with the shingle covered in concrete from the Russian era. Go inland bullet holes still in the house walls. National parks over run with Chinese tourists.

Can't go agin as now insured with NFU & they don't cover Croatia unless I want to risk 3rd party.

Mainland Greece is much nicer.

I think you need to book months in advance if you want to visit Plitvice national park.

Unlike Lenny, I never had any issue with NFU insurance for Croatia.

We are also with the NFU and they would only insure 3rd party so we didn’t go, talking to them it appears that they did a few years ago but they don’t have an agent in Croatia now.

Done Croatia and the former Jugoslavia nearly 8 times now , done the full length of croatia and my advice would be go south. I found the coastal regions down the south the best parts. If you visit the islands you wont necessarily see anything different from the mainland so in my view its questionable whether its worth the ferry price. Use the motorway that lies behind the coastal mountains and go to the most southern point you want to then hit the coast and drive back north slowly along the coast. I've done most of Europe , Oz and NZ but I always find the Makarska Riviera the most beautiful drive i've done. You might only do this trip once so I suggest you do it properly and give it your best shot. The Istrian Riviera in the north is nice but not as nice as the south. Here is my travel blog from 2018 trip covering many places.

We been to Croatia several times. We noticed this year prices had gone up from last year. If you stay away from the big resort area its a great place. On a few occasions we have gone via Ancona in Italy on the ferry to Split. It's a relatively cheap crossing. Beware that 'wild' camping is illegal in Croatia. We've been to Plitvice a couple of times, the thing to do is get there as soon as it opens. We generally stick to the coast and you'll still find small inexpensive places to stay and good food.
