We are considering visiting Croatia and Slovenia next month for a few weeks. I was wondering if any Funsters could share any advice on best routes, stop overs, what to see and any potential pitfalls. Thank you!

One thing to note. Croatia is now in the Schengen zone so any time there will count towards your 90 days.

Can highly recommend Slovenia, we visited a few years ago as we have friends in Ljubljana. We stayed a few nights a lake Bled camping, lovely location with nice walks and cycling. We then headed for Ljubljana for a few days and what a lovely city so with a visit, after visiting our friends for a few nights we then headed to the coast. We stayed in Izola for a couple of night before heading inland and uphill to Bovec which is a great outdoor activity town.

We ve been several times to Croatia, love it although camping is strictly limited to campsites/autocamps. I'm not sure how many will be open so early in the season and the weather is likely to be iffy. Southern Spain/Portugal are probably better choices.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is well worth a visit - stunning scenery

Second that BUT, it’s a major tourist hot spot and when the coaches arrive mid morning it’s heaving with annoying tour groups. Best tip is get there early and do the circuit in reverse - get a map and that will make sense. Worth staying late as they’re all gone about 4pm. We stayed at Korana Camping which is nearby and does a free shuttle to the lakes. Big site but terrain isn’t good in places and you may find yourself a long way from EHU. Restaurant on site.

Many campsites in Croatia. Aires and wild camping NOT allowed. All along the coastline there are so many beautiful campsites but no sand on beaches. We didn’t pre book any and besides Dubrovnik easy to get on. We used Cavtat near Dubrovnik for camping.
We used the water taxis to get around, great fun, right into Dubrovnik, Split, etc. Don’t miss out Ston for the Great Wall of Europe.

This was our trip in 2016.

Lots of other Funsters have done the trip, so I’m sure you’ll get lots of help!

A previous entry of mine on a thread about italian lakes and croatia
Done this several times. Don't be tempted to go for the most popular areas like Garda, Dubrovnik etc . Try the lesser known places like lake Cadazonna or Iseo . In Croatia try not to overlook the Makarska Riviera stretch of coastline and try some of the ACSI sites. If you've never been to Venice it might be worth visiting that. Where ever you go try to avoid school holidays as it can be busy and noisy at those times. There are some amazing places even before you get to those two countries eg The Mosel region of Germany, the lake Bled areas of Slovenia . Here is a link to my blog which i am quite proud of but you might have to scroll around for the appropriate pages . These are the appropriate pages. I would suggest that you click on the photos to enlarge them to get the full benefit.

We have a wedding to attend at Lake Bled in late July, early August this summer so have been trying to book the campsite there for months. They appear to have a UK agent Suncamp who said they will tell us when we can book but we are getting worried that there'll be no space left. Does the site close in winter for a long time? Any help or advice you could offer would be most appreciated

Beware of a night club in Zargreb, where the bouncers all have studded gloves and we’re not very friendly…..well weren’t in 1992…..

We've been 5 times but sailing around the islands off the coast on flotilla holidays. We love it.

We use camping Sobec which is an easy ( apart from the big hill) cycle ride from Bled, might be an option if you can´t get closer, facilities are fantastic....https://www.sobec.si, they speak English so a call or mail will be ok.

Not sure if it closes in winter but we visited in July and didn’t have a booking and got in no bother, if I’m correct there is an Aire next door that you could use.
Just had a look on Searchforsites and there is two Aires in Bled and one next to the campsite.

And loads of dedicated motorhome parking. A useful tip us to catch the earliest free bus that you can to the top of the lakes and walk down. Much easier and quieter. A nice restaurant halfway down as well.

In Croatia the E65 coastal route is fantastic with plenty small sites along the way.

We were there is September and parking was a bit tight when we turned up, but the site itself was so big that the crowds were esily absorbed. I can imagine though that if you get stuck behind a shuffling tour group on the board walks over the water, it would get very frustrating!

Absolutely agree about it getting quiet later, but I would say to the OP don't leave it late to arrive, it's a big site to get round.

Yes it is a big site, you need to be fairly fit to do it justice.

I was there mid September 2019, caught the first bus to the top of the falls at 8.00 o'clock and, apart from 3 others on the coach, didn't see anyone else for more than an hour. In all it's about a 4 mile walk but downhill quite an easy stroll. Can't say it was at all busy

I was touring on my my motorcycle so didn't experience parking our MH.

There are several trails, the longest is 11 miles.

We visited Plitvic Lakes a few years ago, bought our tickets for the next day just before it closed in the evening, then we could get in as soon as it opened before the coaches arrived and really see it at its best without the crowds.

Good plan, this is how you want to see it:
