Looking some advice from some of you seasoned travellers. My wife and I are currently discussing where to go on next summers trip. So far Dublin to Cherbourg, down through France and across Spain to Barcelona. Ferry from Barcelona to Italy then Ferry to Split. We would like to include Croatia and Slovenia. Would really appreciate any info or advice regarding these two countries. What to do, what not to do. Park ups, sites or places to visit. Anything really that you think we should know or a heads up in the direction to find out.

Many thanks John.

Sorry but the link doesn’t seem to work!

There are lots of threads about Croatia and Slovenia on here though, so loads of information available.

Split is well worth the stay, we camped on the south side of the city at an ACSI site with easy bus to the city.

We visited the national park , PLITVICE LAKES absolutely stunning but busy with Asian tourists especially near the entrance view points. We spent a full 8 hours walking in the park & camped close by at one of the parks associated sites which had a free bus to the park entrance.

We also did the national park, KRKA but this is a huge area and needs a vehicle to get around it. We stayed at an ACSI site just near to the main park entrance and the owner also did guided tours which we joined. It was great & well worth the cost.

Everywhere along the coast is beautiful and well worth a visit, too many places to list really but I’ve posted lots of photos from our 2 tours there in 2015 &18 on instagram if you have access, my username is rkt_640, just search back for them.

Slovenia we love too but not visited as many places. Ljubljana is really nice to visit & we camped on the ACSI site on the ring road with easy bus into the centre. We’ve also visited Bled, again photos on instagram.

No wild camping in Croatia and I didn’t notice any aires

Hope this assists Wjklewis 😊

Quite a few restaurants in Slovenia and Croatia operate what they call camperstops, most offer basic services. A bit like UK pub stops I suppose.
But frequently charge 20-25 euro even if dining with them.

Spent a couple of years in Croatia and Bosnia during the Balkans War. If you’re arriving in Split the I would definitely recommend taking the old coast road south down towards Dubrovnik. The scenery is fantastic with lots if small towns and villages along the coast to explore. The area called the Makarska Riviera is beautiful. I can recommend a small place called Gradac. Right on the coast. From memory there are plenty of places to park up.
Follow the road south from there and you will get to Ploće. You can turn left there and head inland to a small town called Metkovic. This is the border town with Bosnia. Insurance allowing, I would recommend a run to Mostar about an hour down the road from the border in to Bosnia.
Croatia holds some bitter sweet memories for me personally but as a country it is beautiful.
Enjoy😁👍

Thanks for the great info

Split only has one camp site within easy bus ride of the city, to the east at Stobrec
We parked up there (booking, even out of season advisable)

Did Split (two days) and then left the van at the camp site and caught a fast boat down to Dubrovnik and spend a couple of nights there.
We stayed at "Edies Sea view rooms" just outside the town walls, a brilliant place to stay
And then got the boat back to Split and stayed another day before heading north via Plitvice

A few points to add from us in term of expectation: Split will be super super crowded as will Dubrovnik in the summer (and most other times) - not much you can do about it but just be prepared. We found our trip through Norway last year to be the same price as Croatia this year so prices are high including the camp sites easy circa €90 per night in some, told only cash most places - quite the opposite. Campsites are in the main huge - their idea of a good campsite is several swimming pools, water flumes, pool tables - full on entertainment (not our thing). Plitvice lakes are a must as said in post 4, camp site at the lakes great but book. Ferry to Hvar a must. Zadar is a beautiful old city often missed. In Slovenia again a must the Vrsic Pass - quite an awesome drive. Glad we did it but off the bucket list now. Enjoy, it will be a great experience providing the brakes hold out!
