So last night I was watching a bit of youtube and I spotted a video entitled "Sharing a secret vanlife hack! free charging FULLTIME vanlife" Excuse the poor grammar and punctuation...not mine.

I thought...here we go...another click bait video but proceeded to watch anyway to find out about the hack.

The video spent a lot of time discussing the fact that the OP was parked up on Morecambe sea front and Morecambe has buildings on the sea front that are run down, unsightly and in some cases derelict. The content then showed the big hack! This free charging hack was to hide your jackery or similar battery in a back pack, sneak into a booth in a pub with a 13A socket and steal the electricity to charge the battery. The video showed the pair of reprobates being so sneaky in their task. So I posted a comment stating this was blatant theft and asked why they didn't just dump their toilet under the table whilst they were at it?! I stated that they were giving motor-homers a bad name and things were bad enough. I was so angry about what their video was promoting especially after the first segment in their video complained about all the derelict business properties obviously left by folks that had gone under.

The OP called me a troll. I don't think I'm troll. I think I'm a conscience campervan man/motor-homer.

The OP then said that they had asked if it was OK to plug the Jackery in. Errr....why did the video show all the sneaking about to plug in the battery to charge it. I asked if they had asked the owner or the pub or an employee? I didn't get an answer but they then stated the video was for "Entertainment" I would say its not for entertainment but to gain clicks in the interest of monetising the video.

Others have pointed out the same that it was theft. Some think its OK. Some said they have gone into businesses and asked if they could charge their battery and be willing to pay. Thats OK...thats the behaviour that should be promoted...not an "entertainment" video showing two cretins acting out theft of electricity. To be clear, they say after the fact they asked for the power, but thats NOT whats shown in the video and my point is if some numpties don't read the comments and only watch the video, this could lead to a another black mark against the camper van man and community. Its disgraceful!

Thoughts?

I've complained to Youtube that the content of the promotes a bad image of the community and simple theft of electricity.

I hope others that watch said video do the same and submit a complaint. I'm not adding a link here.

It only takes a couple of cretins to promote a video like this and the local businesses and council in Morecambe, and every other town will soon ban motor-homes from their towns.

Despicable!

Do they actually have electricity in Morecambe? >:)

Just wrong.

Encouragement to commit a crime .... I am sure there is a criminal offense there even if at some point they claim to have permission to charge batteries.

And I used to feel guilty at plugging in my laptop when on the train.

Isn't the elastictrickery on a train part of your ticket and a "by product" generated by the train? I'd be gladly proved wrong.

Would be funny if when they got back to their motorhome they found the pub manager syphoning some of their fuel out

Can't see it being expensive to charge a battery if they asked.
My local late night drinking hole allows phone charging even providing the charger and lead if needed. I know that's cheaper but not the point.

I've seen a few do this online, and the same in maccies etc..some.ask some.dont.
Loads sit in costa and starbucks etc, getting free charge on laptops and all.sorts when I go in, but never seen a jackary

They look like the batteries are a kWh, so about 25p.

Phones are often charging at roughly a dozen Watts.

The Jackey website suggests it might be charging at over 2000 Watts (10 amps). At the prices businesses pay, it becomes a few quid of theft pretty easily.

Did they buy a drink?
Good question. I assume the did but the OP intimated that venue could be his video editing lounge in future. I asked "What ratio of food and drinks will you be offering the business in exchange for their heating, light, power/charging use for laptop, tablet, phone, shaver, usb blender, power banks and Lithium battery? Why not just back the van up to a window then run a cable in and plug the van in?" No reply from OP. I do hope YT take the video down.

Business electricity is billed at a higher rate remember. Even it was a couple of pounds, I'd gladly pay for the power and the convenience...not film a video suggesting the community should steal power from a business.

I'm glad I have more important things to worry about .

And this " giving motorhomes a bad name " nonsense really needs to die a death . It's a Croc of camel poo

I see no one complaining about the price of a pint in said pub.

Hardly the crime of the century.

Well said. Yes it's click bait type videos that give the rest of upstanding motorhomers a bad name and unsurprisingly banning of motorhomes from parking up.
Good you com0lained to yu tube but unlikely they will do anything about it.

Sorry but 25p, £2.50, £25 or £250 it is still theft.

I don’t think I’d want to carry my leisure battery in back pack to a pub to charge it so what size battery was it mines a lithium although lighter than lead acids still wouldn’t carry like that.
I wouldn’t think everyone watches YouTube do they so the likelihood of giving us a bad name is pretty slim sounds like a storm in a teacup to me🤔😊

Not seen the video, but you don't hook into someone else's electricity without permission.

However, if its a coffee shop or somewhere they allow laptop charging, I suppose it could be OK, but I probably still wouldn't do it.
I've got one and when charging on mains the fan can be quite noisy. It's all a bit FLTish for me to do it.

Report them to the police............

See if they get CHARGED ... :giggle:

I saw a similar video quite a while ago - that person went into a chain coffee shop, did buy a coffee, sat down away from the counter and used the wifi to edit and post videos. Under the table he had his power pack plugged into the mains socket charging away. I wasnt impressed! Not much point asking the teenager barista for permission to charge as they wouldnt be the business owner paying the bills!.

By the way how efficient is charging lithium power banks? If the bank claims to hold approx 1000MWh, how many kilowatt hour units of mains electricity is used?
