I have a UK ID mobile SIM card with 200gb of data and I'm given to understand that I can use it all in the EU unrestricted, I also have a Nord VPN installed on my phone.
The question is how does the VPN work when I install the ID SIM card into my Huawei MiFi unit which I use as my van hotspot , will I be able to get UK TV on my Firestick in Spain for example ? i.e does a VPN work with a Firestick connected to a MiFi unit?

Thanking you in advance .

the vpn will only cover the phone once the sim is in the mifi. the other devices will need the vpn loaded onto them, unless there is some way of loading the vpn onto the mifi which i do not believe there is.

You don't need a VPN with a UK SIM.

If you were using a Spanish SIM you would need a VPN and you would install it on the Firestick and activate before opening any apps.

PS; AHHH Lenny HB beat me to it, if its to allow access to uk TV etc then with a uk sim vpn not required
But surely the Sim knows I’m abroad and won’t allow UK TV access in Spain , am I missing something ?

This is what’s confusing me

Strangely no. They are right. UK TV works fine on a UK SIM wherever you are. We used Lebara UK Sims on our recent trip through Germany and Italy - no problems at all with UK TV.

As I understand it, all the connectivity to the 'rest of the world' still takes place via your service provider, irrespective of where you are, so the Spanish network sees it's a UK number, and passes the connection request onwards back home, where it is granted, and the data then sent back. Makes sense from a billing and data capping point of view, as only your service provider knows what you're entitled to.

As an aside, if you change providers but keep your number, any calls to you still go to the original provider, then get forwarded to your new network.

Out of interest what provider is it that gives you 200gb…😎

Hmm…. In there T&c’s it says there fair use allowance for roaming is 19.30g (I think)

They have deals of unlimited calls and texts with unlimited data for £15…. That would be good if you could use all the data, it also says in there small print that they will tell you to stop roaming unless you can prove your a uk resident after roaming for 4mths….🤔🤔

Ahh, just found a calculator on there site where you put in your monthly plan and it gives you its fair use limited… I put in £15 plan and it’s fair use amount is 11.58gb…🤷🏼‍♂️

Ahhhh ok thank you . So what is the point of a VPN and why do people use them . Is it only if you buy a non UK Sim ?

It’s possible on some mobile routers (Mifi). I’ve loaded Nord VPN onto my Teltonika RUTX12 and I believe it’s possible on other Teltonika units that use their RutOS.

I am aware of this but the op stated that the mifi is a Huawei, and I did not want to complicate things further.

I hope I’m wrong too as this would be a good deal for me…

I had one one I lived in Hong Kong. Allowed me to watch UK TV for 3 years!

Very useful in places like China where you cannot access BBC, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Google services etc etc.

Also if you buy a SIM locally when travelling - generally you get a much better deal for data locally and no fair use restrictions.

By the way - I would be surprised if you are allowed to use 200 GB roaming.

Nope Garry Just smiffy is right, if you read what you posted it says fair use policy applies to data.
Only after 4 months abroad as per fair use policy …I hope .
I’ve heard from others using this Sim that they were not capped . Will let you all know early next year when I go.
