Title says it all.

We’re in Bruges today but would like to spend Fri night/ Saturday in nice French town with boulangerie/restaurants, decent view/something to do before getting ET Sunday morning.

Montreuil’s a bit further than I would like but possible as we love it.

chaser will say Gravelines and I’m open to persuasion - where do you park up as seem to be a variety of options?

Have I missed anywhere? Neufchâtel’s too far from Calais I think ..

Aware it’s Bastille which worries me a bit for finding a space ..

How about Bergues, free Aire, nice walled town. A couple of bars and restaurants. Nice little cafe in the park by the monument.

Or Esquelbecq, little village with a five van Aire. Nice little square with a restaurant, couple of bars and a fab wine shop. Excellent chip van in the evening 👍
Maybe one night in each? They are only 10 mins or so apart.

Bray Dunes CCP. Short walk to restaurants and bars, beach and even the carrefour. But not free so maybe Funers won't like it.

Another vote for Bergues. Free parking at Aire though no services. Nice town, lovely restaurants near river and canal. We used to use services at Oye Plage but they have been removed I believe so would need to use service point at Graveline.

+1 for Esquelbecq, also a very moving memorial just up the road in memory of victims of the Wormhout Massacre...

Another for Esquelbecq and look up history of Wormhout just up the road (about walkable)

I’ve not been to this one, but saved it in my app for future reference. 40 minutes from Calais, walking distance of the village centre, not expensive.

Notes
40 min from Calais, very good reviews, walking distance of town.

We often stay at Neufchâtel before crossing on the tunnel. Perfect distance to set off before boarding the tunnel. We do this so that we do not need to stop and arrive in plenty of time to board the train. We usually get put on an earlier crossing.

Brilliant - thanks folks - this is MH Fun working! We’re just back from taking the dog a cycle round Bruges so will crack open a can of San Pelegrino Aranciata Rosa and take a proper look at these.

we tried to get on Montreuil last week no chance all spaces full and 10 vans in car park so we had lunch and then went to the campingcarpark at Merlimont (like a ghost town). We did stop the night before at Bergues and i wasn't impressed with that, got lost walking round the walls , but as its a dusty car park with vans coming and going all day and night it would be ok if you were running late. I would also recommend Gravelines but as an alternative there is an aire outside Camping Pondervallei at Middlekerke, 178 Westendelaan - 8434 Middelkerke - Belgique A bit expensive @ €23 a night inc all service electric and wifi but it is a seaside town.

I suppose it all depends on what time your train is in the morning, the earlier it is the nearer to ET you might like to be, and a campsite maybe unsuitable for an early start. We usually are leaving gravelines around 5.30-6.00am👍

Could try the Aire at Watten, easy walk into town (bars restaurants) , only about 40 minutes from the Tunnel.

Thanks for all the replies. I have ‘starred’ them in Park4night for our next trip.

We’ve ended up bringing our ET ticket forward to tonight. It was a combination of factors - worries about mum’s health (she was taken to hospital on Wednesday after collapsing and unresponsive twice during the day) but is now back in the care home, weather forecast, worry about everywhere being full because of the Bastille weekend, daughter being home this weekend, son off work Sunday … I’m breathing a big sigh of relief tbh! We’ll stay in Canterbury overnight and head up the road to Scotland on Saturday.
