Hello,

Was looking at insurance and it’s come down to these 2. Both seem to get decent reviews, however I noticed the negative ones re Caravan Guard seemed to be around breakdown recovery being woeful.

Does anyone have experience of either of these guys in such a scenario or can recommend any others I may have missed?

Many thanks
Sid

I have just looked at caravanguard. They came in quite competitive for me.
I did think their breakdown cover at £55 seemed cheap. maybe you get what you pay for.
I have just renewed with AIB, where the breakdown cover is IIRC £88.
I do have to say I have never claimed.

We've been with Comfort and they were good. We are going Caravan Guard for the new van, only real reason is they can do green cards for Montenegro, Albania, Serbia, BIH etc. Comfort can't. Price wise there was little difference. A lot depends on what you want to do and mileage, that's what it came down to for us. Snag with CG is they have breakdown cover included and we won't need it as we'll have Fiat warranty cover.

Does fiat warranty cover tyres too?

Presumably that's for a new van. Does it cover breakdown and recovery in the EU, and if so for how long? (Thanks in advance).
Yes, new van. As far as I am aware it covers what you mentioned. 24 month but you can extend the warranty period to 5 years, but you have to pay for that. See link below for coverage.

Over the last 15 years we have used the breakdown service offered by Caravanguard three times, puncture and breakdown in France where repairs were quickly sorted, the assistance was excellence and once in the UK where our vehicle was recovered from Peterborough back to our local Mercedes dealer in Kidderminster. We would recommend Caravanguard.

Although the standard warranty is two years the breakdown cover was three years. Have they changed it?
I’ve just had a look and it seems a little vague. I'm getting Adams Morey to sort the extended warranty up to five years, so at least I'll know I've got breakdown cover for that period.
It a little vague as to what is not covered with the Fiat warranty. The email I had from AM said
"Please be aware there are exemptions, examples of these are glass, batteries, exhausts (the
Warranty will cover the DPF unit and Catalytic Converters), and glow plugs."

Anyway I'm digressing from to OP.

About two years ago I had a no fault claim ,this was when someone decided it would be a good idea to back into the front of my van while I was stationary and having a cup of tea in the lounge area. This caused a lot of damage to the front of the van. The claim was sorted out very efficiently by Comfort and Aviva resulting in no cost to me or losing any no claims, so I would not hesitate to recommend Comfort to anyone for motorhome insurance.

Don't rely too heavily on the Fiat Warrany cover.

Our new Hymer was off the road for two months because of a big whole in the Fiat cover.

Roadside Assistance got us home OK.
But then Fiat failed miserably to get the van booked in to a Fiat Professional to even have it looked.

Did you select their full European cover? We didn’t as not yet needed but looking at the docs it looks like some form of cover is provided for certain countries

We are with Comfort this year mainly because Caravanguard wanted a higher premium for having the Moho in storage. Strange, must be to do with postcodes. On the other hand, when we had a write off claim for a caravan from Caravanguard, there were no issues. So i found both to be fine.
Check that if you have a breakdown in the live lane of one of the smart motorways, the Highways Agency will arange recovery, so its breakdowns off motorways that should be considered when comparing ...

I was with comfort for 8 years and always competitive on renewal but then they doubled the premium. Said that my cossa storage was high risk. I spoke to the storage and they said they’d had no break ins or thefts for 3 years previously. I called comfort back and they wasn’t bothered. I appreciate costs have increased but not by double. Especially when I got like for like cover elsewhere for cheaper than what I paid the year before.
So I’d go with Caravan Guard out of the two personally.

I have been with AIB for 3 years now.
Caravanguard came in at £313 including breakdown, AIB at £295 so I went with AIB again.
Last year AIB were at £277.
Insured value of £27500.

I was with caravan guard for 5 years, the recovery used to be included in the price (and you couldn't remove it) but reading the small print revealed they didnt cover my 7m 4t motorhome....I did make the person on the phone aware of it and they said nobody had ever pointed it out before....who knows 🤷‍♂️
It didnt bother me as I already had recovery cover but I wonder if some bad reviews stemmed from that issue
I believe the recovery is an add on now

I only left them because they got too dear

Thats interesting, I'm awaiting my AIB renewal any day now, if it's a similar increase I'll be a happy bunny after reading some of the horror stories of premium increases

I've recently moved from AIB to Comfort, the same policy with Aviva, except higher mileage allowance with Comfort, just £70 less mark up from Comfort.
AIB were however better on our scooter insurance.

No, as we'll have the Fiat recovery for 5 years in Europe. The could not extract the UK breakdown recovery either.

It's strange as the quote I got from CG included UK breakdown recovery non-negotiable, you had to have it.

I'm not sure there is any difference with companies outside of RAC and AA. You are generally passed to a local company whoever you are with and many of them use the same central call centre as well. Just check the levels of cover to make sure you are happy with it.

I believe standard warranty is 2 years in UK but 3 years in Europe for some reason. Therefore, I imagine the breakdown cover is also 2 in UK.

Doesn't bother me now as I managed 3 years and 25000 miles without a breakdown. 🤞

Comfort breakdown have been brilliant - once parked on side of road, looked like gravel but heavy rain draining into ditch caused it to collapse and us needing to be towed out. Sunday afternoon in the summer but breakdown truck with us in 50 minutes.
Also with last van, had battery issues and AA attended at home on 3 occasions, no fuss and pretty quick response including a midnight one.
I think they allow 6 breakdowns a year?
