We had our motorhome booked it for the hydraulic clutch oil change at Motus in Glasgow for our Fiat Ducato 2017 with 19500mls. So garage calls and says there is a problem with the clutch, we have just scanned the van and found an error code and that there was a problem with the central slave cylinder possibly leaking as the fluid was low. They advised that they could change the fluid but could not guarantee that van would be able to move after the oil change along with the reset and if it was leaking it could have contaminated the clutch. So bit the bullet and told them to change the clutch as a new slave cylinder came with the clutch and as you need take the clutch out anyway to get to the cylinder you might as well change everything and they found that the clutch inner metal ring was broken and that they hadn't see this before.
Not sure of anyone else has came across this before, but at least we caught it before any major issues occurred.

And was it leaking?

We used them a couple of months ago for another issue and we’re pleased with their work, if being picky their communication could have been slightly better. The you service manager who is a Fiat Master technician was very good, forgot his name.

The guy who was working on our van was John and was helpful as I had asked him to keep the parts so we could have a look at them.

So supposing the plate hadn’t cracked, they’d have ripped it to bits for nowt? Was the clutch slipping or juddering? If not I’d have been reluctant to have ripped it apart, especially at those labour rates🤔
As it Happens, they have found something unrelated to their diagnosis, that is being rectified, so alls good👍

This sounds like not necessary conformatic related, as the clutch is the same as on a manual? I assume?

Had exactly that on a previous van. The clutch just shattered. The garage that replaced it said they had seen a fair few

Did they say what the error code was? That friction plate damage is more likely to be from a ham fisted mechanic allowing the weight of the gearbox to be taken by the input shaft whilst separating the gearbox from the engine.

No they didn't say what the error code was.

Presumably you didn't find out from a code reader 😂😂
Hardly, the mechanic showed me the bits and to be honest I expected it with the loud bang. Was thinking it was the gearbox so happy to just have a clutch gone. Only seen a few exploded clutches over the years. Basically it was usually down to the clutch being not up to the strain of a heavy vehicle or kids racing and dumping the clutch hard under load. You never know how your van was driven by previous drivers if second hand

Clutch wasn’t slipping but looking at the damage it doesn't look like it just happened as the metal is discoloured around the damage area and doesn’t look like a fresh break.
