CLs

Our last 4 years with caravan we’ve used cl’s 90% of the time.
We love them, pay around £13-£17 per night the location and space more important to us.
I also prefer CLs purely for their tranquil and unregimented locations and would continue to use them even if they were at full facility sites cost or even a bit more. At a couple I've never seen anyone else, not even the owner, and there has been a note in the field to say leave the money through their letter box or under the milk churn, in the rubbish shed..…….etc.

When you are looking for a CL site where are you looking for the information to find the site and what are the five things that would make you choose one site over another, put them in order please.
They are listed in the members handbooks of the two clubs, CMC and the C&CC. The CMC issue a map but the C&CC have separate maps at the back of the book.

The entries list the facilities but there isn't much detail. I don't use them often as we generally travel to mainland Europe but we have used a few. A lot are just farmers' fields so not ideal in wet weather although there are some with hard standing. The main thing for us is we like to choose one near a pub and/or one with walking near by and this rules out a lot!

A useful trick is to view the place on Google maps, especially satellite view. This will give a good impression of what there is around it.

Can't help with an order of "want's" as everyone will be different. If you just like to get away from people and be on your own they are excellent.

Sshh , both at Little Baddow , Little Baddow Fruit Farms has ten pitches 2 x 5 and open all year and Mill House Caravan Park , not CL , seasonal as liable to flood but lovely location near River Chelmer.
Many thanks. I won’t tell a soul. It’s between you, me and the Sunday papers!

We do not use the club sites, as we prefer CL’s
There are some real gems about costing between £10 - £15 which is reasonable
And even better some are adult only sites (y)
About the same price as a site will all services etc in Spain and France then.BUSBY

We love the no electric field types. Sadly not many left now, as soon as electric is installed price goes up £7 to £10 a night.

How long would you normally stay at a basic CL?

Two or three days for us.

I start to get itchy feet after that.
We walk a lot so tend to see most of the area in that time.

CLs used to be cheap, cheerful, and basic but modern day caravanners seem to insist on EHU (and use it) which puts the price up.
I don't - no longer a member of CC.

Surely must be some CL sites not affiliated to either of the big two clubs?

I thought it was a condition of them being exempt from planning that they must be members only?

Yes, but not called "CL" - which is a CC/C&MC term. C&CC have "CS". There are others, but not so many (eg BritStops).
Whichever I use are chosen for the location rather than the facilities. I tend to use sites for that reason, even though I have no desire for toilet blocks or EHU.

Yes. but unfortunately not an option at the moment - give me France, Germany or Spain any day (y)

The clubs and their cl / cs dumped us like a hot potato at lockdown. It was the comment sense approach from this small private campsite near Folkestone that saved us. Costing £12 night with electric is very helpfull. So much for the clubs care of its MEMBERS.

But the cl's/cs's are at the mercy of the parent clubs, so not their fault at all.

Agree. That's why our planned cl contacted us to say sorry but we are not allowed to take you for the 1 May booking. Still left us hanging.

What I was trying to say is that the C&MC have seventeen sites open to accomodate fulltimers and others with no fixed UK base.
