Scooped of the local press;
Motorhome parking to be trialed by council
A designated parking place for motorhomes will be trialed by North East Lincolnshire Council in the coming months following approval by councillors.
Currently, overnight parking of motorhomes is prohibited in all council car parks.
The pilot scheme would see 10 parking spaces, with defined parking areas laid out with wooden logs, created on the southern part of Thrunscoe Land car park in Cleethorpes, specifically the hard-standing area near to the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.
The area would include new post indicators and signs displayed, as well as new parking fees introduced at a proposed £12 for 24 hours, with a maximum stay of 48 hours.
This pilot is designed to stop the unauthorised use of Marine Walk Car Park which has been an ongoing issue for some years. Over the summer of 2021 and 2022, joint enforcement was carried out between the council and Humberside Police to deter motorhome owners from inappropriately or illegally using the car park.
The council said it has consulted with a number of local authorities to understand how they manage similar parking challenges. A number of local authorities have introduced daytime and overnight parking for motorhomes in their off-street car parks.
With the number of motorhome owners rising in recent years and the provision of suitable car parking in greater demand, this trial would see a facility solely dedicated to accommodating motorhomes for short duration stays and would encourage more visitors to the resort.
A height restrictor, new signs and line markings are set to be installed at the Marine Walk Car Park to prohibit motorhomes from parking.
Marine Walk Car Park would be open for use for other vehicles, but overnight parking is not permitted. A small charge of £1.50 for 10 hours of parking will be introduced between the hours of 8am and 6pm.
A recommendation at the portfolio’s meeting was made to bring a report back to the meeting on Monday 19 June to consider free parking for up to two hours.
North East Lincolnshire Council and its delivery partner Equans have been engaging with nearby businesses, as well as consulting with CAMpRA (Campaign for Real Aires) to seek their views.
CAMpRA is a volunteer group promoting the benefits of this rapidly growing sector that brings year-round tourism to the UK.
Steve Haywood from CAMpRA UK, who fully supports the pilot scheme, said: “The group is very pleased to support this initiative from Cleethorpes, which will not only be welcomed by our groups of 34,000 members, but many of the 400,000 motorcaravans registered in the UK.
“Plus, of course, the increasing number of European visitors who are starting to visit the UK in their motorcaravans to feel welcome.
“Cleethorpes now joins several towns who are recognising the benefits to local businesses by providing simple year-round overnight parking for touring motorcaravans, which is common all over mainland Europe.
“A CAMpRA survey estimates that over £1 billion per year is spent in local businesses by UK motorcaravan owners. We cannot wait to spend some of this money in Cleethorpes. Thank you from CAMpRA members.”
Camper vans may park in regular parking bays in most council car parks but may not remain overnight.
Motorhomes which would not be able to fit into a regular bay, can park during the daytime at Grant Street Car Park, or for up to 48 hours within a designated parking bay on Thrunscoe Land car park.
No parking is allowed outside of marked bays to prevent parking on the grassed areas by motorhomes or camper vans on Thrunscoe Land car park. Penalty Charge Notices can be issued for any vehicle observed parking outside of a designated parking bay.

Someone will abuse it but well done for trying.

Good for the council.

Will there be fresh water and waste disposal facilities?

There is a toilet block nearby at the other end, there is talk of once the trials ended to provide points

Well done Cleethorpes council. I never understood why parking overnight at the Meridian Line carpark was not allowed. The view from the carpark across the Humber from there is better and you can walk along the bank into Cleethorpes.

My understanding reading the article is that, this isn't the Meridian line car park over looking the estuary.
This car park is at the boating lake adjacent to the narrow gauge railway station that's there and across the road from the Premier Inn.

Not as far as I know

That was my understanding as well. They want to keep vans off the grassed area....... best of luck with that one!!

If Cleethorpes want £12 per night without water and waste disposal, they are way out of kilter with Canterbury New Dover Road P+R which charges £8 for one night with free water and black/grey disposal (£12 for 2 nights.) plus free bus into City.

We should all promote Canterbury P+R as an example of what can be done and at what price.

Applude them for trying but does seem a bit expensive just for parking.
How much to cars have to pay overnight?
I've noticed in other places where they have allowed Motorhomes to overnight they charge the Motorhomes but cars can stop for free. They see Motorhomes as a cash cow.

They see Motorhomes as a cash cow.
They probably do, but judged by other UK holiday prices about average. If it takes thoughts of riches for the council to help establish the concept and principle of overnight motorhome parking then so be it. In all seriousness I do think some members are obsessed with charges, when the time of something for nothing has gone. As always, the simple soloution is if you don’t like it don’t use it.

The car park at the Meridian Line was free so it makes sense for the council to use the pay and display car park instead. The thought of free overnight parking is not a done thing these days.

Couple of weeks ago, mid evening, there were 27 motorhomes parked on Scarborough's Marine Drive.
I though the council had stopped overnighting there.

seen a youtube video that said it was stopped on one end but not at a certain part.

As I DJ in cleggy monthly I normally park roadside (not far from the proposed site) in a regular spot I was told by a local business man to nae bother about getting a ticket as he's not seen a warden in 12 years :) - on an aside note, parking regs posted state parking free for 1 hour between hours 8 til 7 no return in 1 hour etc, so from 7 pm till 9am you can as I do park foc as long as you are not causing an obstruction as it is in the most of the UK without any other restrictive regulations in force

Good for Cleethorpes, for providing something, hope it works out.

I dont understand though why people immediately ask about water and dump, IMO we should be grateful that there is now permitted parking, not immediately ask for more, especially when it means making it more complicated and lessening the chance of getting it done. This area is limited to 48 hours, anyone who doesnt have capacity for that needs to either shorten their stay or go to a campsite.

Why would there be a supply of water or sewage in a car park?

I just thought that if there were facilities for waste people might not dump it in the flower beds.

I am grateful that there is permitted parking and have used similar in various places - some free and some charged. Oh and I don't use anywhere except the correct places for disposal of anything!!!!

Could be worse, new brighton have started to charge £20 for parking on the road overnight now...mind you we feel that is to put people off, not encourage.

Why would there be a supply of water or sewage in a car park?

Well there is at Canterbury P+R, so they must have a reason. Perhaps they want to attract visitors to the City, just as they provide lots of coach parking.
Hawick has water and a new disposal point, as do some of the permitted overnight places in Powys.

£12 for a parking space with no facilities seems too expensive, a cynic might assume it's being set up to fail.
I thought that especially as the car-park is to £1.50 for 10 hours of daytime parking.

It seems to me that whatever facilities are provided they are not enough and whatever charges are applied they are too much.
If you don't like it, the answer is simple - go somewhere else.

Facilities at Canterbury are fine and charges are OK, so why cannot Cleethorpes match them?

Maybe they want the experiment to fail as another poster suggested, or they are pitching the charges so as not to give competition to local campsites.

Would your comment about going somewhere else apply if parking were £50 and facilities another £20? Or would you not like it?

There is a toilet block on the carpark near the entrance that I have used to empty my cassette into in the past being a frequent visitor when DJing, on an aside note the road side parking is unrestricted from 7pm till 8am in most areas, restrictions only apply 8am - 7pm for 1 hr not return etc. and according to a local business I park near they have not seen a parking warden in 13 years :)

Yes, I would enjoy my freedom of choice and go somewhere else. What I wouldn't do is come on here moaning about it.

If you cant manage the length of time with your own facilities then you should be either getting a spare casette or staying sonewhere that has the facilities you need.

If people insist that every place that a motorhome is permitted to stop has somewhere to empty a loo, the end result will be less places.
