Clayton (and similar) integrated power systems

I was watching the roaming Radford's video (yes I know - not sure why I do it to myself!) on their ID Buzz electric campervan conversion and they were talking about the Clayton power system they have installed.

Now it's not cheap but it really does everything you need (Lithium battery, charge from alternator, charge from mains, charge from solar, 3000 watt inverter. ) It's neat, light, small. Easy to install, no complicated wiring involved and so on.

Are these things the future for motorhomes? The guy in the video reckons a Victron system of the same spec would cost more, be heavier and take up more space.

It's roughly the same price as a Victron Multiplus, solar charger and a good battery. Getting it all in one box makes wiring less complicated. But you are putting all your eggs in one basket. If anything fails, you'll have to replace the whole thing.

If this thing also included the functions of an Elektroblock, then I'd be more interested. If it could do the switching and fuses for devices like the pump and lights. I still think there's a market for an Elektroblock type device that's only role is a junction box, switching and fuses and doesn't include all the chargers. With some good monitoring functions. Does one exist?
 
Not for me if it goes wrong you have lost the lot.
I prefer the simple Victron system in the orange van, if anything goes wrong easy to sort out and keep going. :giggle:
 
Wildax are now installing Clayton’s as standard spec in all their “Volt” gasless van conversions. Owners so far seem to be v pleased with it, takes up less space, simple to use/install etc. Some worries over the 160amp lithium and whether it’s enough for a fridge/microwave/induction hob etc but you can add an additional battery. Reliability seems good, no reports of failures.
Personally I don’t like the idea of “everything in one box”, can’t imagine dealers being keen on repairs as warranty would be by Clayton I assume?

And when it's out of warranty, you need a new unit sir only £3500 plus fitting.

I think it's a good option for motorhome power, but it's a bit of an exaggeration to say it's an 'all-in-one' solution. You'll still need a distribution box with a row of fuses, for all the habitation functions, and relays to switch things on/off when the engine starts. I like the inbuilt B2B to charge from the alternator - 40A with an 80A option.
 
Off topic but I did watch the Radfords brining a van back from Italy too the UK. And in a few shots it appeared their youngest son was lying in a bed with a seat belt under his neck. Could be wrong but it didn’t look good to me.

Yes, it was a lounge bench that converts into a bed but he seemed to be lying in it like a bed most of the time. Not sure how the seat belt configuration worked.
