Classic VW Beetle

Looks tidy.Ours just got crushed under a tree so looking for another

We have owned 2 VW beetles, and to me a classic should be
100% original I would not buy that one. :(
I have a mate, that restores old things be it trucks cars or motorcycles and they are classics as they come out the factory, and that includes the paint. ? Bob.

I thought they had banned cellulose paint ?

I thought they had banned cellulose paint ?

Maybe I should have said ? I was referring to the colour and parts fitted, ? as fitting things like wide wheels a small steering wheel bucket seats and full roll cage, and painting it pink takes away the classic bit a little. ?
But then you knew that. ? Bob.

I'm a 'dyed in the wool' petrol-head, cars bikes trucks I have an interest in them all..(even built my own car).

Having said that, I find most classic car owners the most boring people to talk to, moaning for instance that a particular engine is the wrong shade of green etc.. or that the lights have been upgraded to LEDs so the vehicle can actually be used at night!!

PS.. I like that Beetle.

I would not say boring people, they are passionate about what they are doing, and it has to be right, my mate sold a motorcycle to Henry Cole, and he spends many hours finding parts restoring them. ?
When we go somewhere where they are showing classics I love it, and admire the people that are doing them, many would say a lot of the things are money pits ? ( a bit like our daughter and son in law) with their VW camper and the previous mark 1 VW golf convertible ? but they love it and it's good that people do it, because most have been scrapped never to be seen again. ? Bob.

I can see the attraction of being totally original but it makes me sad when I see that taken to the extreme where cars are trailered to shows and hardly ever driven becoming in effect big mantlepiece ornaments.

I brought a 1968 VW 1200 Beetle over from SA. It was 6v and heavy as hell. Made pre-petrol crisis it weighed a ton. It was airtight and you had to open a window if you wanted to shut the door. I loved it. I rebuilt the engine with a friend in their kitchen. We got the pistons out of order so when setting timing you had to set top dead centre to cylinder number 2 rather then number one, but, other than that, there were no problems.
When I sold it to an enthusiast in 1980, it had done 100,000 miles and still purred along. Top speed was it's crushing speed.
Lovely little car for SA but not so great here in the U.K., especially if trying to have headlights on at the same time as indicating. The 6v system struggled to cope. Oh happy days!

Rebuilt this 1969 1500 beetle for my daughters 18th birthday. Her choice of colour I might add ? I needed sunglasses on while spraying it (in cellulose by the way) three coats of filler primer and four of colour if I remember correctly, rubbed down between coats.
