Ola to anybody in Spain at the moment! We are booked on the Santander ferry from Portsmouth next Tuesday (17th Oct). We had originally planned to travel through Zaragosa to Barcelona, heading South along the coast for 3 weeks towards Marbella, then up 'through the middle' back to Santander for 12th November ferry.
However, due to the unrest in Catalonia, we have abandoned that idea and now plan to 'turn right' off the ferry and head to Portugal, travelling South towards Algarve, then, possibly, the Costa del Sol and back to Santander as per original plan.
Or maybe we should forget Spain altogether and stay in Portugal? Can anyone enlighten us about the political situation in Spain? Is it affecting tourists in any way? (We are getting on a bit and our children are worrying about us...tut!) We have never visited mainland Spain or Portugal, so it's all new to us anyway.
We would be grateful for any thoughts or advice (especially regarding the electronic toll system in Portugal).

Been in Spain two weeks now and seen no sign of any unrest,,Drove through Barcelona 10 days ago,,very quiet..Papers always blow things out of proportion..Same in London,,if there is a demo it will only affect you if you are in the centre,,Millions of people in Spain are just getting on with their lives,,,Don't worry,,,,BUSBY,,,,:D2:D2:D2t

You won't see any trouble, just come down the Mediterranean coast way. It's same as when it 'kicks off' in Calais, it looks terrible on the news but we never see anything... Oh saw a punch up once.. But that was good :ROFLMAO:

There is No unrest whatsoever. Not even in Barcelona. It's like saying you are not going to the UK because 10 Scottish independence fanatics threw some chairs in a bar ten days ago. Come to Spain, enjoy the scenic countryside and coasts, the People, the cuisine, the cheap prices, the climate, and read less Dally Mail hysteria.

In Barcelona last weekend no problem. I would have thought provided you don't go to rubberneck at the demonstrations you are unlikely to see anything out of the ordinary

Here at the moment No Probs.

Many thanks everyone. I thought it might have been exaggerated by the BBC et al. Just what we wanted to hear from people on the ground! Maybe we'll run into you in the next few weeks!

Just want to mention that 4 weeks isn't a lot of time to travel and enjoy the places you intend to visit, there aren't as many roads and some of them are not 'great' so don't expect to be able to do a lot of travelling quickly, might be best to stick to one area and enjoy that rather than do lots of time travelling and seeing very little.

Yes enjoy! We're in Benidorm... That's nothing like what you see on the TV either (y)

We crossed on Tuesday on the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao. We've spent the last few days travelling down through Spain and there is absolutely no difference. Everyone we've met have been as friendly as ever. Take whatever trip you want and enjoy it.

By the way the weather is perfect!

Glad to hear there is nothing going on. However, a more accurate comparison would be like saying don't go to UK because of "The explosion of racist violence that followed the announcement of the EU referendum result on 24 June 2016" which "has been well-documented." (IRR) Of these the vast majority occurred in England with the incidents in Scotland being in single figures.

"Scottish Independence fanatics throwing chairs" has no basis in fact and the idea is more likely the result of reading too much of the Daily Heil. As a Scot (with an English wife, many English friends & relations) I get tired of being the target of unthinking insults.

No unrest whatsoever, total confusion but that spain lol

Spain is the same as it as always been, however, the fact that you even neeeded to ask suggests you worry about it, therefore don't go, equals no worry, you happy, we happy, Spanish happy. If you go you will worry, therefore spoiling it for yourself and we will worry about you

You are being a bit sensitive I think. I'm sure he wasn't trying to insult anyone. Just saying, albeit a bit clumsily, that such violence, real or imagined is no reason to not visit a country.

The only unrest you ever get in spain,is from funsters taking up all the best pitches, and drinking all the local brew, rebels the lot of em

It's worth keeping an eye. You are right to be aware. Any marches will be well publicised and generally the worst that will happen is that roads will be blocked.

Spanish demos are noisy affairs. we got caught up in a large demonstration in Salamanca one time. We were on the road at around 6am which we later learned was just before the police put up road blocks. Suddenly we found ourselves trapped in an area where thousand of youngsters were getting ready to march. Loads of shouting, whistles and rattles, they were very loud, there was some light jostling of the van as we tried to find our way out. Definitely scary and not to be recommended :D

You sure the market hadn't set up around the van Jim? Sounds much the same to me!

OK.....forest fires in Portugal have made our minds up! We have decided to stay in Spain for the duration....heading to Valencia from Santander and then down the coast.
HOWEVER..... Just had a text from Brittany ferries to say that, due to poor weather, our sailing today is delayed by at least 2 hours ....this means that we won't reach Santander until 20.15 tomorrow night. We had planned to stopover at the park in Cabarceno.....is this a good idea? (We have never been there before and would have to find it in the dark.) Or is there anywhere nearer the port that anyone knows about? We would appreciate any feedback...we are packed and ready to drive to Portsmouth and feeling just a bit nervous....particularly due to the 'poor weather' scenario!
