You will find the same information in my journal "Languedoc" if you can find it or on the thread attached to it which will run til 20/5/23.
Posted this to link in with voie verte thread.
Enjoy.
Wife had lie in today so set off at 1100 hrs from Mirepoix on a mundane open track with no views and the wind apparently against us.
Nearly missed a sharp tight hand 179 degree turn as you can also cycle to Bram on the cana du midi which we passed and noted yesterday on the way in.
No major hills but slight gradient we feel was uphill most of the way but will find out later.
It's 40 km.
Loads of picnic spots and looks like nice villages potential to explore later. Lavalanet bit of a let down on what we saw but the kebab shop on the way in was doing a roaring trade. 5.50 for a double burger and veggies patty with chips and a coke.
Seen plenty of spots to park along here. Somewhat lacking in nice bridges and cuttings but views of snow capped mountains. Deer and a huge snail spotted today
Map of the route.
Long opening straight.
Above photo if you zoom in you can see a hilltop town and below in the distance visible to the eye but not a cheap smart phone camera are the snow capped Pyrenees
Canon, a beuax village. More later.
just beyond Camon is an old fruit farm using ancient methods of growing.
We can tell l'escargot was not squashed on our return so presumably made it.
The ariege kelpies
the end of the route with snow capped Pyrenees
11 euros for the 2 meals
Now we have done the return journey we learnt some more.
Lavalanet is only worth going to for a burger or to say you have completed the voie verte.
Charbares is probably worth more of a visit than we gave it.
Camon definitely is. This where we went wrong. We went a to b and back to a (with a detour for the lake)
Now we have knowledge we would go round the west side of the lake to close lavalanet on cycle paths which are marked on mapy.cz then either get a burger or head straight back on the voie verte. NB we didn't return this way as we wanted to stop at Camon and we saw the contours you cross hence head out that way. The slope back was lovely. We were regularly cruising at 26kph downhill. I did read it was 220m difference over the 40k
Unfortunately every time we saw a tourist information for a map they were closed for lunch or night. We may try in the morning.
Popped into the river to cool the legs at Camon and really lovely with artists painting but wife stayed out talking in English to a french lady who only spke french and both understood each other ! and no photo of me braving the cold river (warmer than I thought)
Lac de montbel which was just fishing lake from what we could tell. Worth finding out if you can cycle across the lake where there is a footpath
Charbares old station. And behind the bush is this, a full on fill your boots electric charger unit which secures your charger and your bike (you provide locks) and now Charbares becomes a walk round town and you can boost to turbo !
map of this voie verte which joins up or is part of the voie verte to la canal du midi. Think it was 39 k Mirepoix to midi.
Camon, beaux village
