No idea if it is the Aire or not but there is a road for parking at one of the smaller side entrances to Fontainebleau that we (and others) have overnighted before.

I LL get a pinpoint for you.

The grounds are totally free to enter. Huge fish in the lake. Cycling permitted but the forests around aren't great off road cycling unless you have mountain bike.

Yep stayed there approx 5 years ago. There is a large military barracks at the end of the road (nearest the chateau). There is a lot of movement to and from there during the day. To exacerbate this, the road is cobbled and the military are mounted. You have to walk around the gardens to get to the town. The gardens are pleasant. The chateau is a must if you enjoy history. It was Napoleon's favourite chateau. What is it with the French and their liking for diminutive men?😊

Btw _ cycling is not permitted in the gardens.
The Campercontact entry used to suggest there was EHU. There isn't.
The trees will block any sunshine from your solar panel and tv reception is non-existent.

Thanks for the explanation. Colour blindness doesn't help.

However, you can push a bike through the gardens but not ride it. Guess how I know? I was caught by a member of staff who was unsurprisingly riding a bike at the time. Thank heaven the guillotine is no longer in use.😊

I'm on my own... Will it be safe?

If mine and Taran_Las place are one and the same, I wouldn't be concerned in the slightest.
We didn't see military horses (we have stayed there at least twice) but the road is cobbled. In all likelihood others will be there as well (cycling and getting caught or not) 😀

With all the military around, too right its safe. There are generally at least a dozen vans parked up too. If you do go, i'm sure you'll enjoy every minute. There were two dutch girls in a van on their own when I was there. The garden gates are locked in the evening. Make sure you know the time of locking otherwise it's a long walk back.

You should have a look at "les gorges de Franchard". Very nice walks in that area. Very busy with tourists during the summer season and weekend

It's lovely there but make sure you have a map on your phone with GPS and no need for WiFi.
Very easy to get off the paths.
