If the vehicle battery runs down but the leisure batteries are charged, and you are not near EHU, is it practicable to charge the vehicle battery to get started? What about connwcting An inverter and running a simple battery charger off it just to boost the engine battery a bit? Or is that what you might call a non-starter?

I have used jump leads to connect leisure batteries to start battery. It worked ok but do check if your leisure battery can safely supply the high amps required for starting. Some gel or lithium batteries might not or be unhappy afterwards!
Usually most vans have either solar that charges starter or a battery master type box that sends excess power from leisure to starter batt to avoid flat starter batt.

That works fine, especially if you already have an inverter and charger, and it's just a matter of connecting them up. A smart charger charges better than a simple charger.

An alternative is to use a jump lead from leisure positive to starter positive (the negatives are already connected). That causes a big current surge, but as it's short and hopefully not very frequent, it won't impact the leisure battery life too much.

There are various 'battery maintainer' devices which trickle charge the starter battery from the leisure battery. Some won't charge unless they sense that the leisure battery is itself being charged. Others, including the BatteryMaster, charge whenever the starter battery voltage drops below the leisure battery voltage. They are usually permanently connected, fit and forget.
