Hi , what do you use to clean the inside of the cassette ie Elsan cassette cleaner or something else.

Any bio washing liquid will do just use it instead of the regular stuff that you put in after emptying

Thetford Cassette Tank Cleaner , Halfords and most camping shops

The Thetford Cassette Tank Cleaner 1L not only freshens your tank but also removes the stubborn calcium deposits that collect on the moving parts and on the tank walls.

When I bought my current van the cassette was so bad I couldn't get it clean, I tried everything to no avail.. so bought the Thetford "Fresh Up Kit " which includes not only a new cassette but a seat and lid.. makes the toilet like new.. about £114 ..from Jacksons Leisure and other online retailers.
if ordering make sure you order the correct cassette , check model number on your toilet

We didn't like the smell of the proprietory liquids so also used Bio washing liquid. A couple of times a year or more I removed the seal so that I could more easily gain access to give the mechanism a better clean with toilet wipes, then lubricated the seal with olive oil and replaced it. I then half filled the cassette with a solution of bio washing liquid in hot water and give it a good shake before emptying and then rinsing with cold water a couple of times.

how much per litre do you use? that's what I use
That’s a really good question, as I don’t actually measure it. What I have done in the past, is 2 kg into the fresh tank and fill, running through the taps. 24 hours later, I run the kitchen tap and fill the kettle etc, as it then descales the appliances, but the cassette is just a fill with water and add mixed citric acid. Suppose I should measure it really, but I reckon about half a kg.

Does a great job and very environmentally friendly 👍🏻

Results are pretty good too 😊

Tried cheap cola. Didn't really work. Tried the Elsan one. Not much improvement.

Looking at your Putinbox, I am envious! You could eat your dinner off ...

Well. maybe not.

Going to try Citric acid.

Lidl/Aldi bio washing sachet.
Between trips away I lob in a sachet and fill with water then leave for a couple of days before emptying.
hi is that hot water or cold.

Cheap Lidl bleach, a good shake with a weak solution flap open slide closed to make sure the rubber seal is cleaned. We carry 2 cassettes, one more than 10 years old never had a problem

Food grade citric acid.
Ditto, and for many other descaling jobs too. (y)

For day to day maintenance of the cassette, I too use Aldi's Almat washing liquid. I prefer the tablets, as no risk of packaging rupture or spillage, but I can't seem to find them lately.

scotjimland. Nice to see you posting again Jim. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

You really don't want to leave it in the system for more than two hours as if you have through the hot taps so it is in the boiler citric acid will eat stainless steel if in contact for too long.

I put in a double dose of the limescale cleaner, the stuff you use to clean kettles.

Seems to have improved matters, but I probably should have left it overnight.

warm water and a dishwasher tablet does an absolutely amazing job. Told a friend with a year 2000 van that the cassette was scaled and disgusting. Next day it was like new after emptying and a rinse with clean water

White vinegar works far better than Thetford cleaner, citric acid even better a mixture of the two is awsome.
Lenny how much vinegar do you put in also is it just white vinegar or the white wine stuff .Ta
