Just started!
My Lunar Roadstar is equipped with a Carver Cascade water heater - I'm unsure which model!
This is the wall switch. As you can see, when switched on the top LED & the Battery LED are illuminated. The top LED indicates it's ON and I guess the battery LED indicates 12v from the battery but I'm unsure what this actually means - anyone?

The lowest LED displays red if the gas has extinguished or been blown out - normally this is off and the gas burner is ignited heating
the water. Yesterday all working fine and a good supply of hot water :)

So, having confirmed hot water supply was working, I turned the gas off at the bottle and switched the unit off. 24 hours later I still have very hot water even though all is off maybe because of the insulated tank or is there an electric heater element as I'm attached to a mains supply?

Now to the 'wind baffle plate' pictured below (sorry for poor picture). This plate fits in front of the gas flames of the burner and there should be a square of thin insulation, maybe even asbestos on a 20 year old van BUT, as you can see most of the insulation has broken away, it's only about 6" x 4". Can anyone suggest a suitable insulation replacement to do the job?

Sorry for all the questions lately!
Thanks

It seems that you may have a Carver Cascade Rapid GE model (gas + mains electric ) that has an 230v immersion heater fitted for use when on EHU. There should be a separate on / off switch for this somewhere.

I think you might have solved it :)
I know there's a switch next to the remote inverter switch I did think it was part of the Carver equation and switched it on + gas + Carver switch in order to get hot water. I've now switched it off and 'proof of the pudding' will be when the water cools down - I'll check and reply tomorrow.

Thank you, I'm learning a lot.

I can confirm the switch referred to above (next to the remote inverter switch) does indeed heat the water in the boiler :) No gas required and I'm learning more each day :)

I wonder did you source a suitable replacement for the insulation pad behind the plate? I've been tinkering with mine and I have some (most) missing too.

I'm afraid not but I did source some fire cement and built up a replacement using it. It stuck well, took a while to harden and I was able to shape it before it became solid.

Sorry I'm a bit late to the chat but only just spotted this. My motorhome has the exact same water heater including the gas ignition switch you show. The midlle led with the battery symbol should only light if there is a battery issue, this could be not enough voltage or in my case a bad soilder connection at the pcb in the black control box under the actual water tank.

On your asbestos type insulation in the burner compartment, mine had completely disintegrated over the years. I was able to make a new one by buying a cutting of this product from my local builders supplier

I have enough to redo it 10+ times if it disintegrates again.

Hope this helps, either you (if it's not too late) or indeed someone else in the same boat.

They stopped making Carver water heaters in 1996 ! There is a straight replacement called Henry so you may get spares from stockists (Google) I have seen them fitted to vans upto 2005 so how many stocks some van maker’s carried is anyone guess 😉

Hi StitchUp as a fellow Roadstar owner (1999 620) I have the Lunar manuals which cover all the internal bits and pieces. Not sure what model/year your Roadstar is or what items are fitted but I guess much will be the same as mine. If you need a copy of the manual let me know.

Thanks for the kind offer :) My Lunar was born 2000! Still going great. I'll PM my email address if in a format that suits.

Try typing into google search, “fire resistant register board” that should display a number of products that can be cut to size.

As I said in my reply earlier, most builders suppliers will have it. It was commonly used for soffit on houses prior to the pvc used these days. But the suppliers still carry it, I'm guessing for repairs to older houses.

I've got a '98 Swift Royale that had Cascade GE which corroded through, replaced with a Henry, which also failed, and now replaced with a Truma water heater. Couldn't find a 2nd replacement Henry. Adapter plates are available to cover the Cascade's large wall aperture and make a neat job of fitting the Truma unit's smaller external grille.

I believe they still sell Henry’s but as you say they used to rot a mesh gauze bit near the burner-probably what others are replacing with the fire board’s
