Planning to Tow and have chosen to fit a TOWTRUST Bar to our MH. Has anyone had problems in determining the appropriate fitting as TOWTRUST continue to require all detail from Vin plate and want to fit Coach Bolts(4) through garage floor. Chassis strengthening kit and Chassis extension has not been ruled out yet.
Any help and or advice would be very welcome, Thought it was going to be plain sailing but frustration is setting in!!

You could consult SAP at Doncaster. I had a casual conversation about tow bars while I was there and Mick identified what I would require for a tow bar by looking at the structure of the inside of the garage. I can’t remember the details as I wasn’t there for a tow bar, but I do remember something about the chassis rails moving laterally if the right fittings were not used!

I've used Towtrust many times and have always received excellent service and sound advice. My present towbar (on a Carthago) was supplied by them and is excellent. Very easy to fit yourself but electrics are a bit more tricky.

This appears to be a problem with some motorhomes due to weight saving measures by the constructors.

I was at a tow-bar fitter a few days ago and he had a Cathago on his forecourt on which he was about to install a tow-bar.

Just chatting to him and he mentioned the very light chassis under the garage of the Cathago which he was going to have to fit strengthening members to the existing and bolt them through the garage floor.

That is because you are meant to take the towbar ,with extensions, all the way back to the original chassis & cross brace. sometimes in excess of 2m.

That rings a bell for what I was told at SAP.

Interesting responses, reassuring at the same time. Thought it was going to be so easy, having an Alko chassis. Bit like buying MH!! nothing straight forward. Thanks
Martin

Which AL-CO chassis do you have ? Mine is rated at 4250kg (heavy chassis).

The tow bar is attached directly to the AL-CO chassis extension (below the garage). The rear tow bar has two vertical longitudinal steel plates which attach directly to the AL-CO chassis extension.

My tow bar (with tow ball attached) was installed 2010. New regulations came in during 2012 so things may have changed.

Give Mick Parkinson a call at Freckleton (Lancs) see website, you might be surprised! He fits/customises towbars for most dealerships in the NW and direct contact = no commission to pay! AND you can tie it in with a weekend.mid week break in the Fylde/Blackpool. No connection other that last three vans done by him!
