Hi, Does anyone know of a better option than one of these. I have replaced this 3 times so far, each one knocked off by a branch

Shouldn’t they be orange my bad you mean the high level lights have a look at Hella lights😊

Great idea, would you mind if I strap you on the roof and you can deal with any low hanging branches as we go along. Promise I will keep the speed at 50mph (y)

We had to give up site inspections in Cornwall when the scratches on the OFFSIDE of the vehicle became too difficult to polish out

There are lower profile LED versions that dont need to be as big to hold a lamp and holdet

here’s one for you😊

Okay the Hella ones look good and LED as well so even better. My next question is what colour do they need to be, red and white as per my initial picture or amber?

Yes red and white as per original😊

if these are the side markers on your motorhome, they are actually not needed at all. if you are concerned about the protrusions, you could replace with reflectors, which would be much slimmer?

If they are top end markers, then would be needed.

If your vehicle is over 6m long they are required.

That picture is a box van, not a Motorhome
Not needed if it is a passenger vehicle, such as a Motor Caravan.
It is a common misunderstanding they are needed - but they are not.

Look at this Autotrail Cheyenne Tag Axle, over 8M long and find the side markers ...

I could post a picture of my own 6.7M Motorhome which doesn't have side markers, but the above is more dramatic with its very long body :)

I believe with type approval now required newer van have them as for older vehicles that may be the case🤔

Construction and use, and lighting regulations

All motor caravans (also known as camper vans, motor homes, recreational vehicles) used on the road must comply with various rules about their construction. The motor caravan must be safe, in that it must be well-engineered so that it is not likely to fall apart or otherwise cause danger to other road users.

In addition, from 29 April 2012 onwards, new motor caravans have been required to be approved. This means that a government agency will need to sanction the design of new motor caravans before sales can begin.

Existing motor caravans, already registered with the DVLA, are not affected by approval. Likewise, conversions of registered panel vans into motor caravans are not affected by approval. However it remains the responsibility of the manufacturer / converter to produce a safe vehicle.

There seems to be a misconception circulating about a requirement for ‘crash tested’ beds or seats. This is not the case. The rules on MOT testing (annual test) are not changing. Only the rules applicable to the construction of new vehicles are changing

Seriously, it is NOT a requirement. If you check the MOT regs, it is very clear that passenger vehicles do not need them. and there is no "from this date" or "before this date" proviso for Marker Lights.
I am not saying they are NOT a good idea, and truthfully, it makes total sense for the rule to apply regardless of body type, but regs are regs, and they are not a mandatory requirement.

Hear what you are saying however the Op has obviously got them on his vehicle and it would be sensible to keep them😊

The MOT rules are a bit black & white. Where a light is fitted it must work and comply with legislation. Simply removing the light entirely would pass an MOT but a cracked lense would not. The same will high level LED brake light bars. They can have a percentage of LED s not working. But remove completely and it will pass the MOT. without any mention

I would have to disagree with this as well (and again, that "if it is fitted, it must work" think is a common falacy)
If a light is not in scope of testing for the vehicle (such as side markers for Motor Caravans), it should not be tested. And therefore the tester will not know (and should not care or take any interest in his testing role) if it is working or not.

The place to find the info is also not the tester (they certainly are not always correct themselves), but the MOT regulation handbook.
