These affordable ways to convert some cars to campers seem to be becoming very popular especially as they are easy to plug in & remove when not needed. Here's some that we spotted but please post any others:
Campal https://campal.co.uk/ various layouts from single to doubles from £950 - £1850. This UK company is shipping these a lot to Europe too - very popular on German Facebook groups.

QUQUQ https://ququq.info/contact/ququq-in-england/ - see these at the Shows - German made but UK distributor & designs for a wide range of vehicles

Amdro http://www.amdro.co.uk/ full set up from £1895 but some good partial cheaper options too

There are several facebook groups for these and they are also mentioned a lot in other groups. I have a doblo, but a permanent conversion, ot is even registered as a motorcaravan, wont get that now though.
Did think of doing this but the one I have came up. keeping the rear seats would have been a bonus.

Our first camper was a Toyota HiAce Super Custom similar to this:

Three rows of seats (the middle seats swiveled) and they folded down to make a huge bed at the back and the front seats reclined enough to make single beds. There was also space behind the third row of seats and we put kitchen etc in there. No loo of course and not enough headroom to stand up.

ours didn't have the lockers at the side and had more room behind the rear seats.

The curtains had electric closing :) We had an awning that attached to the (open) tailgate to give extra room. Loads of happy memories around "the passion wagon".

In New Zealand and Australia they have people carriers converted to campers. I think it was Jucy vans.
Also I know of some one that hired a single berth mini camper in New Zealand.
They look a good idea but the cookers are at the back. Having the back door open to cook might not be so good here.

Some interesting designs and ideas, not my cup of tea, but could be ideal for weekends away at events, festivals, etc.

Think this interesting area needs its own sub section in Forums, as they seem to be getting nicely popular 😊
I like the ideas and set up very much as an aside or addition to a “normal” motorhome, and especially if for a second vehicle.😊

One of those towing a caravan can be the perfect touring/ exploring setup, you drag a caravan to act as a mothership; park it up somewhere and have days and long weekends away exploring/camping in the day van.

They'd all be very much more practical with a (possibly integrated) rear awning. Something that when closed didn't look like it was tacked on and that didn't require fiddly assembly and pegging out. I really believe the converters are missing a trick with this given the number of potential purchasers that will pass them by because of the kitchen position and (lack of) toilet facilities.

Time to get busy designing then, Tony!😊

This is the kind of pop up tent that can act as quick easy additional space https://hub.cinchpopuptents.com/ which copies a popular, but sadly discontinued,
Decathlon version:

I remember many years ago, being on a site with our caravan and a flipping massive Isabella awning.
After it was put up I said to Mrs yoghurtpot that one day I will make an awning that you just blow up with no poles, easy peasy.
She just laughed and said I was daft but I wish I had pursued my idea.
Think where I might be now!
I could have afforded 2 Morellos!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

There used to be Toyota Previa campers owned by a hire company running around europe, and back in our tent days I always wanted one of those roof rack tents.

edit I think the Previas were branded 'Spaceship'

It is Jucy https://www.jucy.com/nz/en/campervans/nz-campervan-range/jucy-cabana/ which look like permanent conversions but interesting:

I've seen a few 'tailgate' awnings on VW T5's perhaps an inflatable option to use as a rain shelter when cooking & a place for the porta potti?

I'm my head it would be a back-shell in grp deep enough to take convoluted awning fabric that pulled out on rails. Simply pull out then push it back. Designed correctly it could replace the rear door(s).

We looked at a setup like this for towing our caravan, but at the moment they only do the Caddy Max 4X4 in Europe it may be here next year so we will look again. I don't want to tow a caravan off a muddy field with a front wheel drive.

Spotted this Campal video & if like me you wondered how easy it is to plug in & remove these kind of temporary conversions think it is helpful:

Back in the late 70s there was an igloo type tent with four inflatable tubes that you inflated with a hand pump..It never became popular..BUSBY.

Definitely tacked on but not too fiddly, bit of spare waterproof material sewn onto an old fishing bivvy tarpaulin groundsheet hooked over bike rack on last vehicle vw camper. Worked a treat, in reasonable weather as a portaloo/ store/dog room

Small point maybe but none of these vehicles look like cars to me, surely they are actually all vans with added windows?

Lots of these type of vehicles are well appointed cars that drive well with the added advantage of van size space (y) Quite different from the van versions with windows but they are another option.
