Stayed last night on the New Dover Road P&R at Canterbury.
They are in the process of installing new barriers for entrance & exit together with new payment machines.
The system now is that you drive up to the barrier as normal and press the button and a flimsier ticket is issued. Take the ticket and retain for use on buses.
When you want to leave, go to the new payment machines , on the monitor, press start and then enter your reg.no. when prompted (MH is scanned on entry).
The machine then tells you the no. of days and the amount to pay. There are now several ways inc cash & contactless. Take receipt if wanted then drive up to exit barrier where reg.no. is read and barrier opens.
Spoke to Colin Parry (sp ?) Who was on the scene. He is the chap from the Council who is pro MH. Very nice man. He explained that one of the other P&Rs was going to be adapted to take MH with direct access off the A2.
We thanked him very much for all his efforts for us Motorhomers.
Prices remain the same at £3.50 per day but the lady telling you to insert your ticket has now gone.

Thank goodness for that! We were there a couple of weeks ago just as they were starting to put the new system in. That "lady" was audible all over the m/h parking!
The overflow area, to the right after the barriers, was also signposted for motorhomes and a couple of vans were using it.

However the £3.50 per day is a bit misleading - it's £3.50 per day or part thereof, but the 24 hour period is from 00.00 to 23.59. So if you overnight you will actually be charged £7.00.

Still not unreasonable though considering it includes unlimited bus travel for up to 6 persons into Canterbury (and you can take your dog too; we asked). Well done Canterbury!

The gentleman's name is Colin Perris. He is indeed very MH friendly and accomodating, as shown by removing height barriers so that there is access to the overflow MH parking area, to the right after passing through the entry barrier.

I had an arranged meeting with him at New Dover Road P+R in July, because, after several correspondence between us, he wanted my views on what facilities they should provide at the planned P+R which will be at Wincheap. While it has at present access off the A2 it is several miles to reach it, and at the moment no direct access back on, but he advises that the A2 junction layout will be changed and access will be short both on and off.

Colin and Canterbury seem to be willing to accomodate MHs and I think we should keep up the dialogue with them.

Interesting

Will the apnr camera recognise number plates from all countries or misspelt private regs?

Well done for your effort(y)

Thanks for that. Nice to know some one likes us.

Do you know if the way through to the overflow parking - on the right from the barriers - has been marked out to keep cars off it? We were there last month and twice it seemed as though car drivers had moved the cones out of the way so they could park without having to walk too far.

@Pilote87 No the whole block you refer to was full of parked cars so we went onto the normal area first and then moved across to the overflow later.

The overflow area often gets full with cars when there is a cricket match on as the P+R bus stops outside the ground on its way to the City. Earlier this year the staff were stopping MHs going in there on a cricket day - fortunately there was still room in the normal MH area. We were heading for the overflow because it is flatter and quieter, with more room to spread out.

You can't park in the overflow area in the run up to Christmas either. It's only available to use if the car park isn't busy.
