Hi,
my Ne143 charger has now failed and I am planning to replace, at the moment I have decided to go with the NE287, which has the same dimensions, so easier to fit in original location, my question is, the NE143(mh) is 15a and i have looked at both models of NE287, one is 17a, one is 21a, in my ignorance to electrics, can i replace with higher amps like the 21a or do i need to stay close to the original amerage of 15a on the NE143 and purchase the 17a NE287.
thanks for any help

Why not get a decent separate multi stage charger with battery type selection to give yourself some future proofing?

Looks like it does:
It's a 3-stage intelligent charger, yes. But is it a 'decent' one? Will it charge two or more 100Ah batteries, if the OP decides to add extra batteries? Some of these caravan-type chargers fail if they are required to charge continuously at full output for several hours. Other brands like Victron or CTEK will push out full output 24/7 and not miss a beat. And one wonders why the previous one failed, so maybe just getting another of the same will eventually fail the same. Also does it have a lithium setting, in case of future upgrades?

You can find the maximum amps to push into your leisure batteries. Add up the total amount of amp-hours (Ah) of the leisure batteries, and divide by 5. So for one 110Ah battery that's 110/5 = 22A. The charger can be anything up to that amount. For two 110Ah batteries, that's 44A. There isn't really a lower limit, except that it takes longer to charge. I have often used a 5A charger on a 100Ah battery, it takes ages but eventually gets to 100%.

Exactly what? As autorouter mentioned, it'll charge even a massive battery bank eventually. The original failed, but it was probably the one fitted in 2007, so that's a fairly good showing! It's 3 stage and supports multiple battery types, which is pretty much the same as my Victron IP22 specs wise. If this is a swap-out-swap-in replacement without needing to faff with repatching wiring or space constraints, it seems like reasonable choice.

Hi, thanks for your input, yes, the original was fitted in 2007, so if the new one last this long I will be happy and yes, I wanted to do as little as possible on changing cables etc, as this setup has worked well so far, I may go for the 21a and this charger is future proof. Thanks again for your help
