hi everyone

we have 2 Carrera CrosscityE elec bikes and wondered if it’s possible to fit a throttle on them to make it easier for us to pull away and stopping for lights/junctions or whatever

We have to rotate the pedal crank to engage battery assist atm

cheers and i’m hoping for a positive outcome or it’s looking like forking out for 2 bed bikes

Al 👍

cant answer definitely..

but I have an e-bike with a throttle but you still need to pedal the crank before it will engage the motor .. from Woosh bike specs..
If you don't want to pedal, simply push down on the thumb throttle which is next to the grip on the left side
The bike will woosh you along nicely.
Please note that the throttle is not twist and go and is activated only after you pedal a turn.

another thought.. does your bike not a have a 'walk ' mode you could use to get started ?

search Youtube , there are a few e-bike hacks on it

yes i’ve seen those Jim but a lady was showing Val her bike the other day and from a standstill she could just twist the throttle and off it went, she said it made her be able to pull away without wobbling all over the place lol

I think they were from Holland and looked very similar to ours as in the frame, infact i’d say the frames were identical and had disc brakes and front suspension

I think that you can only have a ‘throttle’ on a uk bike to start off up to about 3mph to help those who may have a disability etc. After that you need to peddle. Any use of a throttle after that makes it a motorcycle with associated legislation.
Been a while since I looked at the actual legislation and it may have changed.
…..so yes it is possible
….don’t know if you can retrofit but am sure it could be possible!

One thing you can very easily do it switch to the highest assist level when setting off it reduces the wobble quite a bit and requires no modifications

Can’t answer your specific query, but we have a couple of Wisper Ebikes, both have throttle assist. This means we can twist the throttle and off we go from a standing start without touching the pedals. You can get up to 5MPH without having to move the crank, really useful for getting momentum. Also useful if pushing the bike up an hill.

The only thing I would say to anyone thinking of getting an e-bike is beware of the weight the vast majority of them are c24kgs with the battery in situ. Due to weight restrictions in our garage I remove batteries and store in the hab area.

Take a look at the Miriders they have a thumb throttle for the initial push off works really well 😉

I have an AS e bike with throttle assist. This means can twist the throttle from a standing start. They are UK bikes and he has a stand at most of the Motorhome shows. Very helpful and good support.

hi Dave

when we were at Stratford in the summer there was an EBike stand there, all I remember was the frame looked all aluminium and very sturdy

Did you see them and can you remember what make they were mate

I’ve looked at Mirider and not sure they’re what i’m looking for tbh

Al

Our early e-bikes could be operated by throttle to help pulling away. The current regulations require that the power is only ever pedal assist and can not be used to pull away. Also it must cut out if you stop pedalling. You can still have a throttle but only active whilst pedalling.

Actually Jim

ours do have a walk mode but i’ve never tried it from a standstill 🤔

But I certainly will tomorrow now you’ve mentioned it

nice one and thank you 👍👍

Once again thanks for the advice, it’s all very welcome and appreciated

Hi, I am sure the E bike stand at Stratford was AS bikes, he is always there and they are stainless steel.

I’ve no issues with weight thank goodness so able to leave batteries in situ, tbh as they are within the main frame they’re not that easy to removed needing to fold the frame for access so I leave them be

The bikes i’m wanting or at least looking at are larger and heavier so i’m really having to study if that’s the way I should be going

We bought decathlon e bikes in France and that was the tip in the shop when we tried them Liz does tend to wobble on starting. It makes a big difference and costs nothing!

To be fair Al I don't think you could handle the Miriders takes a pro really have you thought about trikes ? 🤣

And it's not legal in the UK.
Other than a very low torque walk throttle it must be powered by pedal power alone.....no throttle control allowed.
Mine has a walk mode and the power/torque is so low I can hold the bike back and no chance of it moving me when sat on it.

have you thought about trikes.
Take real care if choosing a trike. Some of them are really (really) awful to ride.:swear:

Back to the original question. Keep your eyes open at the open air shows. A few+ years ago. I found a kit with a thumb throttle from a standing start. It even had cruise control as well :giggle: So easy to ride.

Not so sure about its legallity. :worried:

These days I prefer my scooter. 🛵

It was probably an old model. Our bikes are twist and go because they are old models.

Following my first response #6 apparently throttle on an e-bike is only legal on Ebikes purchased post 2016 and must not exceed 4mph on throttle only.

did you mean pre 2016 ?

mine goes full speed on thumb throttle ..
Whoosh bikes are still sold like that ..albeit illegal to use on public roads..

I’m pretty sure that this method on early bikes is now illegal. You must use the pedals to get electric assistance. The old bikes that had a throttle are EV just like a car or scooter and therefore require all the driving licence, insurance registration etc. I am not speaking from a knowledgeable position but I think that’s what the legislation changes did?

No Jim, just checked the article again, clearly says “after 2016”

Just about to watch Watford whip Norwich FC’s arse. I check after the game has finished. COYB uppa Towen.

I've never tried using the 'walk' mode on my cross-city. Certainly don't intend fiddling about fitting a throttle. Keep thinking about a lightweight m/c or scooter though.

They live in Spain so no problem 😉
