It wouldn't be any good to many folks, ourselves included, with a £200 - £300 LEZ fine each way.Sorry I can’t help but I’ve used CAMC Abbey Wood a number of times and it’s an excellent location, especially now with Crossrail. Daren’t look to see the prices now![]()
In fact you don't need an Oyster Card. As long as you have a UK debit card you just tap in and out with that. Works as easily as the Oyster, very slick.C&C Chertsey, inside the M25, but no LEZ rubbish. Fair walk or cheap taxi to train, gets you into Waterloo, and London is your Oyster card!
It depends where you're coming from and where in London you want to get to. We live up north and have family in East London and after trying a number of different sites we eventually found that CAMC Hertford suits us best. We were also very pleasantly surprised by what a nice town Hertford is. It has 2 railway stations on separate lines into that London. North has trains to Highbury and Islington while East has trains to Liverpool Street. There's lot's of cafes, bars and restaurants to use on your way into or out of the metropolis, both stations are an easy enough walk from the site, taxis take 5 minutes.Know there are a couple of CAMC campsites within the M25 but looking for places to stay outside of that which have a train station within walking distance, or a bus route, ideally around 30 minutes commute into central London - any suggestions please?
It’s the number 3 bus and goes all the way to Victoria via Westminster and very close to Oval tube and cricket ground. Used to be very handy for us when Claire lived near Oval. Mind you the bus takes 50 mins to an hour to get from campsite to centre so not ideal otherwise. She’s moved now and it’s no use at all.I used the CAMC Crystal Palace site in early June for 3 nights (£25 per night), the train station is a pleasant walk across the Crystal Palace park (half to three quarters of a mile). Trains about £8 return. Buses are just across the road from the site entrance and so very close, but not sure where they run to as I didn't use them (prefer the train).
No 3 bus…. runs about every 10 minutes straight into central London (Whitehall), runs all night as well. Cheap as chips with your contactless card or better still free with oldies bus pass. Crystal Palace just down the road has loads of shops, restaurants and bars, very vibrant kind of place. Abbey Wood area by comparison is a bit grim, nice site though.I used the CAMC Crystal Palace site in early June for 3 nights (£25 per night), the train station is a pleasant walk across the Crystal Palace park (half to three quarters of a mile). I heard that this site is closing soon.I used the CAMC Crystal Palace site in early June for 3 nights (£25 per night), the train station is a pleasant walk across the Crystal Palace park (half to three quarters of a mile). It's had an extension although there's planning permission to build new flats on it.I heard that this site is closing soon.
It’s a bit like Baltic Wharf, been closing for a couple of years now but mired in planning delays. It’s a great site, the single reason I remain a member of CMHC.I heard that this site is closing soon.
Happily not affected, but if I was I’m not sure it would be a deal breaker. In, say, October a pitch plus ULEZ would cost about £50. With the advantage of free, convenient bus travel that’s not too bad for a trip to central London when you consider the alternatives.Crystal Palace will be within ULEZ https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone/ulez-expansion-2023 from 29 August https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/
A taxi to Staines station from either of Chertsey's campsites is probably the quickest way into Waterloo, it shouldn't take much more then 40 minutes on the train, another alternative is a taxi to hatton cross tube station which is on the picadilly line but that is a little further so more expensive. As a slight aside note, there is a very old pub called The Green Man a short walk from Hatton Cross tube station, it is directly in line with the southern runway so when aircraft are landing east to west you can sit outside and watch the aircraft flying over at less than 100 foot, it's quite interesting if you like planes.C&CC Chertsey is a long walk to the rail station but the site itself is close to a couple of pubs. Chertsey rail is also a dlpw stopping service or you could change trains but still likely to be 50 minutes to Waterloo. If you were going for taxi (Ubers work well in this area) then I'd perhaps go to Weybridge for a much faster service 30-40 mins depending on train, but careful timing on roads as traffic can be very heavy into Weybridge.
Could also look at C&CC Walton with train from Hersham again a longish walk, or C&CC Horsley with train Effingham Junction.
