We arrive off the boat at Santander late on a Monday afternoon (or early evening) in mid April.
heading to Portugal, but thought we would get there via the coast, so looking to head along the top and then down the left side of Spain.

Can anyone recommend (or not recommend) a camp site within an hour of so of Santander, ideally to the west.
Also looking for one for the next night somewhere on the north coast, Gijon, Corunna, ideally with something to see locally.

I would and do, spend the first night or two at Cabarceno (elephant park), free, but no services, or there wasn't when we were there 2 years ago. Lovely spot, and well worth a day in the animal park. There are services approx 5 miles away at Lierganes aire.
So many places along the northern coast to stay. We usually use stopovers taken from search for sites.
We also stay a day or two at Cabarceno on the return to Santander as it's only about 45 mins to the port.
Enjoy.

I can absolutely recommend the campsite Ive screen shot from the ACSI App below. Excellent spotless facilities, restaurant and nice pitches. You can even make a reservation if you email them once they have opened for the season so the office is staffed. Comillas nearby is well worth a visit, on the list of Spain’s most beautiful places & you can even get your Motorhome parked on the first side streets as you approach from the campsite, the road that leads to the sea headland. Or you can catch the bus from outside the campsite but just ask where it picks you up from so your sure as there are no stops About 50 min drive from the ferry terminal

Camping Oyambre is in your chosen direction, about 40k from Santander. Has a restaurant swimming pool and bus stop outside. 15 minute walk to beach side. English spoken if you ring to book.

The services are in fmthe official Motorhome area that no one uses because its on a slope and away from the the lake. They are a bit grim but OK for emptying.

Ditto - the site bar/restaurant is good - decent pitches.

Would support the suggestion of the elephant park. If you can accommodate a loop to the south or are returning to Santander/Bilbao, Burgos is a good site to use - there is a delightful 20 minute river walk west into the city, you will meet a lot of strollers on the way! I understand there is now an aire by the river.
Corunna also recommended as a visit as you go west.

I would also recommend San Vincente de la Barquera.
Lovley area. Parked on the front next to the park adjacent to bus station . which has toilets there's a water tap in the park .
Good selection of eating drinking establishments .Also a market on various days .
Stopped here on a few occasions traveling to and from the ferry . Good fishing for cuttlefish on the bridge.
Will be stopping there again this year.

Santillana del Mar Is a perfect place, we love it there perfect newly opened Aire. Fantastic place to visit with great restaurants and shops. Great medieval style town

We stopped there in October 23, no services but very easy access to and from the port.

Comillas is worth a stop to see the Gaudi House and it has a new Aire. The free Aire in A Corunna to the west of the town looking out towards Hercules’ Tower from near the disused elevator to Monte San Pedro is great but due to the way you have to park, 7.5m maximum.

San Vicente de la Barquera is a great campsite BUT you can't usually book unless it's for a long stay, so getting there off the boat may not guarantee you a pitch.

We usually use the Aire (Camper Park) at Santillana del Mar. Short stroll into the town and good restaurants, bars and tapas.
Another 👍 for Santillana del Mar, beautiful medieval village with great restaurants ♥️
