We are travelling to Malaga in March and are considering a different route through France. We have done the coast Rouen, Bordeaux, Irun then across Spain. Also through the middle Orleans Bourges then A75 Millau - AP7 many times. I have noticed some people prefer another route Reims, Troyes then Lyon and Montpellier then down the coast. Do you seasoned travellers think it would a good route to take for a change, any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance

Why not indeed. We’ve done all the ones you’re suggesting and they are all as broad as they are long, except in inclement weather, where, IMHO, ‘West is always Best’!

Lyon is a smog controlled zone now… you can drive through the centre, well we did two years ago nearly 7.5T, but common ‘best practice’ is to follow the lorry route…

We came down the west route this time and hated it. We have also done the Montpellier, Lyon route in the past and not liked that. We far prefer the A75 if doing no tolls. If you do tolls then it doesn’t matter which except I think the western route is most expensive. Put it into Via Michelin and it will tell you all the tolls. Put car & caravan as that is class 2 like Motorhome’s.
For the A75 you need all weather tyres or snow chains in winter.

Unless there is shed loads of time available, I wouldnt consider the Lyons route. Its a long way round
