Where do people usually park/camp while waiting to board the shuttle to UK?

Last year at Calais we arrived a couple of hours early and were told we couldn't go through and couldn't return until after midnight because the parking area was full.

I switched my engine off and refused to move

Because there was such a queue behind us the operator reluctantly let us through
- the parking area was empty!

Many of us used to stop an Cite Europe but not recently. There is definitely a requirement for a secure holding place. We have stopped at the Carrefour near Dunkirk if needing shopping or Gravelines. We stopped once at Montreuil and there were single blokes wandering around so I think even that far inland you need to leave someone in the van.

Do you mean just waiting for a few hours or somewhere to stay the night?

And I guess it also depends from which direction. We have stopped twice at Ostend with it's lovely beaches then driven straight in from there. Just over an hour's drive normally.

You could always pretend you have a pet and drive into the pet reception car park which is on the left before you go through check in.

We tend to time our journey to arrive just in time for the crossing. From the north we tend to stay at Graveline with about half an hours journey, from the south we like Le Crotoy which is about an hours drive.
When you’ve checked in and waiting to board there are car parks within the terminal compound but as others have said try not to arrive too early.
