On 4th van so not a total newbie....
Looking for a short (er) EHU lead around 15m looking at a lot they seem to be 1.5mm rather than 2.5mm, is 1.5mm going to be safe, as would make the canle far easier to handle in freezing conditions.

We use 1.5mm cable and it's fine. If you are going to be plugging in a 3kW kettle or electric heater I would go for 2.5mm. I bought a length of the blue arctic cable and made up two leads, one about 5m and the other is about 15m.

From memory one or more of the UK clubs don't like 1.5mm cables so in the UK I tend to carry the original orange 2.5mm cable when touring in the UK.

Mine is 1.5mm² and 25m long. We don't use hook up often though, biggest drain would probably be the water heater - 6 amps in high setting.

Generally we only use EHU if free on Aires/Sites and they are normally restricted anyway so would limit to about 8A, at home we would just use to cool fridge overnight before we go anywhere, so sounds like 1.5mm would be adequate, just that quite often aboard and on CCP aires in France the hook uop can be on the pitch so a 25m lead just means loads of cable everywhere..

And if it’s coiled up, it stays really warm!

Tony

Coil it up inside and it serves as an additional heat source (y)

I’m the odd ball here.

I use 2.5 cable and it’s the stay flexible stuff in any weather conditions.
Our 25m is 2.5mm. As our 10m 1.5mm is starting to show it's age we'll probably replace soon.

When we do, it'll be by using the connectors from this and cutting a spare 25m into two so will end up with 10m, 15m and 25m all in 2.5mm.

So, can you shuffle along the odd ball couch so we can sit down as well, please!:giggler:

I use 1.5mm² for a 25m and a 15m extention.
15m is very short so 1.5 will be fine.
Contentals normally have 50m leads using 1.5.mm² it's fine providing you don't use electric heating.
If on "free" leccy, in winter we will normally just leave the heating on 2kw, with a gas boost if needed, but turn off when using kettle etc. find this is normally sufficient as can is so well insulated.

We have a spare 25m cable so will go with Gellyneck suggestion.

I have a set of these, 10m & 15m:
Absolutely excellent quality, good for a temperature range of +90 down to -40!
You have got to be having a laugh... £71 for a hookup lead.....I'd want gold conductors for that

The voltage drop at 16A with 1.5mm² cable is 2.65% for 15m, and 4.43% for 25m. So a 15m cable is within the '3%' guideline, but a 25m cable is not. That's why they specify 2.5mm² cable for a 25m length. However a 15m length of 1.5mm² is fine, even at 16A.

If you keep the amps down to 10A or less, then the voltage drop even for 25m of 1.5mm² cable is 2.76%, so that's within the 3% guideline.

We'll be using the existing connectors on the 10m length when we get home and these are the "extra" set we got to make up the 15m. They seem to be of decent quality.

I have a 25M ehu cable and it is always too long. So I'm gonna cut it in half and add the necessary plugs to have 2 12,5M cables. Sorted.

That's what I'll do, as forgot we had a spare, but will do 10m & 15m as us more flexible, and we need 15m to connect at home.

Still got the original 25m cable which always seemed a bit long, hence buying a 10m & 15m.
Have found the 15m to be the one we use nearly all of the time, in the UK as well as in France & Spain

We hardly ever use EHU but when we do 25m is often too short especially in Spain & France.

Really? I've not been to France yet, but in Spain 25M was too long at every site we stayed at.

The reason you don't seem to find a 1.5mm2 cable its because the regs. The UK wiring regulations covers caravans, motorhomes and the minimum CSA of flexible cables for motorhomes and caravans is 2.5mm for 16A supply. If your main breaker in the van is 16A, the connection EHU lead must be at-least 2.5mm2. The reason is to be man enough to carry enough fault current to trip the B16 breaker. EHU sockets are not connected to PME but at a local TT earth rod.

I make my own, all on 2.5mm cable.

Unless you're on one of the UK club sites with a fussy warden who'll tell you that you aren't allowed joints...
