Sorry, I did mine in Wolverhampton a few years back so can’t help.

I would look for a C class training and test though. It was the same price as a C1 and you automatically get C1 anyway as well as C.

In fact, I would now just go straight to C+E as you get the lot then and it won’t be much more, or at least it wasn’t when I did it.

'C' and 'C+E' has more frequent medicals than C1 and starts at age 45. Same medical but maybe stricter criteria and fequencymeans more expense.

Thanks that’s really useful.

They don’t, they are one and the same. People with grandfather rights don’t have to do the medical from 45, those who don’t have them do.

Are you sure!
Drivers with a C or C+E have their first medical at 45, then every 5 years until 65, after that it is every year. I know as I have a C+E - which I let go at 65.
My C1 requires a 3 yearly medical starting at 70. I've just taken the medical and applied for the renewal of my C1. I could have reinstated my C+E using the C1 medical, but did not bother.

I went with UKHGV, a company run by two brothers. Cost £1600 including medical, driver training, test, access to the CGI hazard & theory mock test etc. They'll even let you pay in instalments. All straight forward. I need an auto and these were the only company capable of providing one fairly local to me in North Yorkshire.

Many of the theory questions are HGV specific based about tacho's, retard brakes, diff locks etc... all very interesting.

EDIT: forgot to mention that they'll supply nationwide, your theory learning stuff is all online and driver training and both theory & practical test will be local to you wherever you are.

It is correct.
Only the grandfather rights C1 last until the standard license expires aged 70 if no medical revocation etc. New drivers have to comply with the group 2 rules as the extract from the regulations

Drivers who were awarded a Group 1 category B (motor car) licence before 1 January 1997 have additional entitlement to categories C1 (medium-sized lorries, 3.5t to 7.5t) and D1 (minibuses, 9 to 16 seats, not for hire or reward). Drivers with this entitlement retain it only until their licence expires or it is revoked for medical reasons. On subsequent renewal or reapplication, the higher medical standards applicable to Group 2 will apply.

Anyone needing a C1 test is subject to the same rules as C+E so may as well take the highest category test available if affordable.

I have not undergone any training with them but I have taken one of their instructors out on an advanced driving test. Excellent driver but cannot comment on tuition ability as my role was as examiner rather than pupil. They have an office in Banbury and a training site near Abingdon. Generally get positive reviews.
