Licence renewal in 96 days - there was an excellent thread on here with pretty much step by step guidance on the renewal process, forms, medical etc - so many threads on C1 hard to find.

Please can someone either give me the brief rundown or point me to a good thread on this topic?

Thanks in advance

C

This is the thread you asked on earlier, Chris.

Did mine end of last year.

In outline terms -
  • obtained D2 and D4 forms from DVLA
  • completed and signed D2 myself
  • eye test at local optician and he completed and signed the D4 page/s relating to eyes
  • visit to my own doctor and he did examination / viewed health records and completed and signed D4 relevant pages
  • take a photo / scan of both sides of your existing licence and keep safe
  • posted off forms to DVLA - do this between 90 and 56 days and no new photo needed
  • licence returned within 2-3 weeks with no issues and all classes retained
I used our own doctor / optician to ensure minimisation of potential questions / challenges from DVLA. Cost me just over £100 but D4D may do it for less but potential for "miscompletion".

Hope this helps but give me a shout if you need further.

Hi I have just done mine,I used drivers medical solutions.cost £60 he filled the form in told me where to sign I took a pic. Of front and back of my licence, sent forms and old licence got it back in 10 days no issues at all only thing was I lost 3weeks because the new licence runs from the day they process it as apossed to when the old license ran out

Medicals done by 'D4 DRIVERS' on internet. They are all over country. My own Dr used to charge £90 then refused to do them with heavy workload. Most major Post Offices have the D2 forms which come with C1 form.

You do not need to send your original licence at the time of the application. That is your only proof of the categories you are entitled to drive. DVLA will not accept photo copies as proof of entitlement, should your new licence arrive with entitled categories missing. It does happen, and has happened to operational Police Traffic Officers, ie, a loss of their Motorcycle category, despite being qualified for years. 🤷‍♂️
You can use European car hire as an excuse for retaining your original licence, until the new one arrives.

Good luck. 👍

Jock. :)

Had my medical on the 1st Feb, used D4Drivers, medical carried out at local hotel, £58 .
Posted all forms on the 3rd Feb, tracked licence update on DVLA website, my licence was updated online on Friday 14th Feb, received my updated licence today 20th Feb.

Noted others saying don’t send old licence back, I did, saves having to return later.

Hard bit as far as I was concerned was keeping my signature inside a white box at end of declaration! :giggle:

But had your new licence arrived minus entitlements, you couldn't have argued the toss with DVLA without proof.
I never return mine, (annual renewals), but instead put it through a shreader once I have thoroughly checked the new one. 👍

Cheers,

Jock. :)

If you have any kind of heart related issues then expect a long wait. Mine took 8 months!

My wife's took four months. If you have had any medical condition such as cancer of any form they will want to write to your consultant whether it is likely to affect your ability to drive or not!!

Advice was to return old licence with application, I did not want to give DVLA and excuse to reject the application.

I did photo back of old licence to be sure I have correct categories updated.

Letter received back with new licence did ask me to return old licence if not already done so.

As I put I did not want to give any reason to delay my licence.
