Hi
Can anyone help, it's about purchasing an exchange gas bottle, for motorhome use, from one of the large chain supermarkets in France.
1. Do you need to supply a French address
2. Is the initial bottle purchase expensive

Hi
Do you have an empty one (speaking of an exchange)?
If yes, what's the trade on it?

How many kgs the bottle is to be?
I f you need an address for the contract, let me know and I'll give you mine
Edit here is the price of the empty13 kg bottle according to where you buy it.

But I can tell you that at Bricomarché it's nearly nothing something like 5 euros

At Leclerc:

32,90€ is the full bottle

Someone told me that he just gave the address of the supermarket.

I live here and did this recently. I have also bought them in the past for our bbq and butane for an indoor cooker.

1. Yes, they ask for a French address to fill in the contract form, but they are not remotely interested and do not ask for proof. They usually ask me to fill in the form. It is often only a solitary employee, in a kiosk remote from the shop and you are getting in the way! The form has boxes for the road number and name, the Code Postal and the town or village name. Give the address of a local campsite or whatever; but without the campsite name obviously.

2. I bought a 13kg propane from Leclerc in January this year and it cost €35 for the bottle and €45 for a full replacement.

Funnily enough they charged me €39 for a 6kg propane cube (made mostly of plastic) last June at €29.50 for a replacement.

The contract allows you to take it back and recover your fee BUT that section of the form does require identity to be proven. Probably to stop bottle theft?

Hi
Thankyou for this information, I'm actually asking for family member.
He doesn't have a French bottle, so this is what he will be looking to buy, from what you say, Bricomarche, seems to be the best place to buy from, thanks again and thanks for offering your address, your very kind (y)

Not sure he will want Butane rather than Propane but, more to the point, that is a way better price than I got stung for. More like the price I was paying a couple of years ago. I know Leclerc stores are franchised but that is ridiculous! My bottles are Butagaz.

Great, thanks, just the info I wanted, he will want to keep the bottle anyway, good idea about giving camping address, it all seems easier than he thought (y)

I use the bottles shown. Blue from almost anywhere, white from Netto and most Intermarche. Both have a 21.8 LH thread as do our 4.5kg Calor butane. You can buy and exchange from the cabin or nowadays the 24 hour cages. (An interesting experience)
Ensure you have the high pressure 21.8 x W20 Pigtail (Tuyau de Gaz))

It's not much indeed. I won't be living there anymore after the 31st of August, so after that date, tell them to just say "we moved into the motorhome IF ASKED" , but they won't need it after having bought the first one, that's for sure! Never been asked in 10 years time. Mainly it's just in case you buy too many... they consider it's not normal and you might be a criminal. So tell them to be nice , no more than 2 ..... the man who will be in charge of the stadium when I leave is called Kamel:eek:..... I don't want him to be in troubles!
Now for the supermarket, if they take a bottle from Leclerc, they'll have many more Leclerc supermarkets on their way than Bricomarché ones.
I have to do quite a few kms to go and buy mine!

Yes, I've used the cages too. A testing experience and doesn't get any better with practice!

I do prefer the cages as trying to find the pay cabins open and getting the assistant to get out and serve me instead of taking money for fuel was frustating. The cage was slow but sure and seeing a door open for the empty then after confirming, another opens for the full one is weird.
Got a lot easier once I realised the instructions were also in English

Unfortunately I'm supposed to be able to live in French but, if you ever see me going round and round the instructions for things in English too, you will probably understand the real problem!
