Hi folks,

We have been looking at this Motorhome.
It is GVM 3850kg with a 2.3L Multi-jet 96kw/130HP Euro 5 Diesel engine.

My question is, 130HP - is that enough for a vehicle of this size.
Many other Motorhomes we have looked at have 150HP.

Is the extra power a must have, or just useful from time to time?
Any thoughts or comments appreciated.

Cheers
Bryan

Our friends asked me the same question re their purchase of an Ixeo the same model this year and my advice was yes plenty of power and if necessary you could have it chipped, they are very happy with it as it is.

I have a 190 bhp 3.0 litre Fiat, son bought one with 130 bhp to tow trailer with race car on board, told him it would be underpowered- how wrong was I, keeps up with me without any problem.

Mine is 4250kg, runs close to full most of the time. Never found it an issue.
Done several runs to Spain and a couple to Morocco so dealt with the Pyrenees and Atlas mountains in its stride.
150 is maybe a benefit but not something that would stop me from buying a van, plus you can have a re-map of the 130 engine that would get you up to that power rating for a few hundred quid.

Most manufacturers put the same engine in all models these days and have different ecu maps on them.
For example New Ford Transit 2.0l euro 6 engine comes in 3 maps 105, 130 and 170 bhp.
The torque is identical in all 3
As already mentioned, remapping is an option, although if going down that route, I would be very careful in chosing who does it and would always have a before and after dyno run. It's not all about how much power, how the power is delivered is important. The Ford euro 6 2.0l (and the euro 5 2.2l ) , remapped make 200 bhp easily with and a nice increase in torque.
A proper remapper will tailor the map to your vehicle and what you want to do with it.
