I used drill bits which is all the kit is... Steel rods of varying size.the only fly in the ointment is you need a set of tools to lock the camshafts and crankshaft

Sorry you are incorrect, you need two camshaft locking tools plus the crankshaft locking pin that is muchI used drill bits which is all the kit is... Steel rods of varying size.
You undoubtedly do not understand the setting up of the camshafts/ Crankshaft timing on a Renault GU9 engine, you need to lock both camshafts with a specific tool, unbolt both camshaft sprockets, ( They don’t have keyways) so are free to rotate, replace timing belt and release the automatic adjuster, re torque both camshafts bolts ( using new bolts with Loctite) remove both camshafts locking tools and crankshaft locking pin, rotate two whole revolutions, refit all timing tools and check the automatic adjuster needle is central,My mechanic did it with a bottle of tippex
