I had a little ding on the corner of the rear bumper of the Pilote P740.

A quote from SMC made my eyes water at a couple of quid under £1k. Which does include the orange marker light to be fair.

Has anyone got any more affordable recommendations please?

Thanks

Maybe buy the part yourself and get your local body repair shop to fit it? Just a thought.

Not sure from the photo is it GRP or capped ABS?
If GRP find a boat repair man.
I would take it off and do it myself doesn't look too difficult. I expect SMC were quoting for a new corner moulding.

A whole new bumper, its one piece they say.

SMC won't repair they'll replace, they don't have the expertise to do repair work like that, a boat repairer or independent MH/caravan place are likely your best bet if you can't sort it yourself.

The bumper end caps are separate units and are designed that way for easy replacement. The end caps are heat spot welded to the main bumper section and then secured by a stainless self tapper on the bottom edge.

SMC are taking the easy way out here as the clearly don't want to or don't have the skills to split the damaged end cap off the main bumper section.

I had a similar mishap with my G740 and repaired it successfully. It's not fibre glass it's a thermoplastic moulding and easily repairable.

If you want at get a new end cap, give Haynes Leisure a call, they are normally really helpful.

If you want to repair, I can give you the Pilote paint code.

Don't know what's happened to the link. Here's the info on the paint code.

Pilote have a 'target' colour for their GRP moulding suppliers so there is no RAL paint code, but base this on matching the FIAT colour palette for the base chassis. This applies to both the coachbuilt P series and G integrated series.

Paint colour equivalent is FIAT BIANCO 210/R. This can be mixed at your local car paint supplier into a touch up pot or spraycan.

There does look to be a join between the corner piece and the straight but if it's just part of the moulding, I'd be tempted to look underneath and use a multi tool, carefully split them and then have a go at repairing it myself. Fill the gap with a bit of sealant. Nothing to lose if it really is a new bumper job otherwise. I've just repaired the roof of a caravan following a blow from a falling tree and with the help of Youtube, actually enjoyed the challenge.

To be fair to SMC, they have been very helpful and very quick. The bumper is indeed made in three parts, but are joined together so you buy the complete package. That now has become our plan B.

Plan A is, armed with information from this thread (special thanks to Sasbo ), I have a boating friend coming round for lunch tomorrow. He will have a much better idea of what the problem is and if a fix is viable.

Thanks everyone - I have learn't that hedges sometimes hide really hard things, like walls and banking. It was the slightest of kisses to.

Mine wasn't as bad as that but my local and reliable mobile dent repair man sorted it on my drive by plastic welding, skim of filler and blow in with matched paint. You'd never know it was damaged and has done 3.5k miles since with no re cracking.

And hedges seem to be able to run behind you with some speed specifically when you're reversing!

I had similar damage and had it repaired.
Looks like all the pieces are still there.
Google plastic welding repairs in your local area.
Good luck.

I repaired a cracked plastic roof panel using the method I saw on Youtube, using aluminium mesh and a standard soldering iron. Took a little while (1-2 hours), but the result was really good. I put a load of motorhome grade sealant behind (over the meshing once it was melted into the plastic) to add strength and it is sound.
