Few years now
We are due to head off to Spain in a few weeks for 35 nights and was trying to work out what the trip might cost.
We are heading out of Portsmouth to St Malo doing @ 2600 miles and returning from Bilboa to Portsmouth. Planning on staying in a mix of Aires, Campsites & three nights in hotels. I would guess that the main meals will be a rotation of two nights van and one eating out. The spreadsheet I normally use for motorbike trips give me an average spend of £100 per day which includes the ferry & fuel. I am sure that I can do it a lot cheaper if we use just aires & wild camping, but is £100 per day a reasonable sum?

I’m not sure about your route as I travelled from Calais via the A75 to the Med side of Spain and back last month but I used the websites TollGuru, viaMichellin and both Campercontact & Park4night to help me budget. The tolls came out at around €30 for the return trip more expensive than they predicted, which I thought was excellent as I have a 5200kg 9m tag axle and most tolls charged different categories for us. But at least it will give you an idea.

Totally varies from person to person. Your meals out could the Spanish equivalent of weatherspoons or Michelin star restaurant the hotel could be a cheap ibis or 5 star luxury. I usually try not to think too much about what it costs it's probably going to be more than I thought

We budget 50 euros a day plus fuel and tolls. Always stayed on acsi sites never been completely skint by the time we got back. Always have access to more just in case though

£3500 for a months holiday does sound a bit minty.
We would spend far less as we never use campsites or hotels.
We always eat local food but would only have a meal out maybe once a week.
Really the choice is yours as to how much you spend - if most of its on a credit don't worry until you get back :drinks:

Our Spanish winter trip worked out at just under £50/day for the pair of us.

We normally spend around £2500 for 9-10 wks and thats us including fuel from Scotland, a few tolls in France, mostly toll free. We eat out once a week at night, nothing too fancy with a few cafes during the week. Mostly all free aires apart from a few and a weeks campsite. We dont feel we are missing out on anything, it works for us. (y)

I don't define myself by my County of origin but those from Yorkshire frequently appear to do so. I do like value for money however but a spreadsheet defined holiday is a bit of planning too far for me!

Have spreadsheets for finances, pensions, monthly bill breakdown, utilities. Too much time on my hands😀

Just like to know my outgoings. Have to top up my Army pension with savings to support my non working lifestyle.

And make sure you are parked up as beer and wine are often included.

(as a side note the word for "Menu" in Spanish CARTA : "menu del dia" is just the
lunchtime meal)

When we eat out in France or Spain its always lunchtime. Always cheaper for some reason even if it's the same menu.
Generally our toll charges are close to zero.

We generally don't budget, we are like many, rich pensioners..
However here are some tips.
Diesel is about 1.85€ a litre less the 0.25c per litre discount..valid until mid September, but could be extended. Ask if you don't get.
Food..more or less a necessity..so bank on being less than UK.Shopping in markets is cheaper and fun.
Alcohol...cheap as chips....sorry...chips ain't cheap anymore...but Alcohol is.
Lots of free local Aires and value for money private ones too.
ACSI sites if you have the card. If not get one.
Eating out....better value at lunchtime around 2pm.....10€ per person or less, includes a drink...or in our case a bottle.
Don't go looking to eat evening meal at UK times....normally 9pm would be early, except in tourist(Beni) areas where you can eat anything at anytime....
We had a great day yesterday...did a MTB ride, cooked our own Chinese meal with beer and wine, stayed on a free Aire with electricity, played my guitar then watch the cricket on the TV and then Liverpool v Newcastle....total expenditure...10€. A bloody great day....

This ⬆️.
Evening meals out are relatively expensive, lunchtimes give much better value.👍

Problem I find about lunchtime meals is that after a lovely meal in a restaurant / cafe we like to have a few drinks afterwards.
Normal when it’s an evening meal.

Can get a bit messy when it’s lunchtime though. Longer teim left of the day to drink …… hick. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: 🥳🥳🥳🍷🍷🍺🍺🤪🤪🤪

Self control...that's it...self control is needed....it's very much how it is in Spain...we have lived here for over 20 years and very rearly eat in the evenings...our lunch can start at 2pm and extend until 4pm...then if course...it's siesta time....,,👍👍😀🇪🇦

No good my eating lunchtime as even after one glass of wine I feel dozy and need a snooze. I guess in Spain it's more excusably called having a siesta.
A glass or two of wine doesn't have the same effect in the evenings.

We have no problem with eating and drinking at lunchtime in Spain. We just follow the local practice and have a siesta. The afternoons are usually the hottest part of the day so sleep through it in the shade.
