Hi everyone,

My Fiat Ducato 2011, Swift Bolero with a Comformatic engine, (I know.....the eyes will be rolling) has broken down, on the grey waste service area at Camping Albufeira. When I reversed it juddered like crazy; when I drove it, it juddered too and then it seemed to lose gear, yet wanted to keep moving as I pressed the brake pedal and engaged the handbrake. Yesterday I organised help through my breakdown cover; one guy with a low loader eventually arrived, rolled his eyes, turned the engine on and off multiple times, and sent for a diagnostic kit....and left. The next mechanic arrived in a small van, used the diagnostics and told me I had to go to a garage and he would get the low loader to come back today, however, it's a Saturday and they are closed until Monday. There is a Fiat garage in Faro, but it has some dodgy reviews. Does anyone know MCCAR in Faro? Does anyone know of an alternative garage? There is an English guy I spoke to on the campsite yesterday, who had the same engine, one year newer and he had the same problem. He ended up needing a new engine which was done in France and cost €17,000 in total:eek:. I'm obviously worried about being ripped off too. Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Sorry to hear this. Can't comment on garages. If it's possible to get it recoverd to the UK it would be better for you but breakdown companies usually take to to the nearest garage. Maybe contact them and ask - or read your T & C's to see where you stand.

Just to say - it's a comfortmatic gearbox not engine. It sounds like it might be a gearbox problem so the engine shouldn't be affected. Still, gearbox repairs can be very expensive too.

Really sorry to hear about your problems. First thing is not to panic, it' doesn't sound like the engine is the problem. It sounds more like the clutch isn't disengaging properly. This is probably due to a problem with a component in the clutch system called the Concentric Slave Cylinder. It's a common problem on many clutches. The problem is it is buried inside the engine/gearbox unit and needs the gearbox to be removed to repair it.

It may simply be a case of adjusting it which can be done without any mechanical work and just needs the correct diagnostic equipment. I wrote a techy thing but it may be worth putting it under the garages nose to see if they can try the routines described under the section "Limping home to avoid recovery". The document talks specifically about a diagnostic system called Multiecuscan but the routines are probably available to most garage commercial diagnostic systems under slightly different procedure names.

Unfortunately, I don't speak a word of Spanish so can't translate any of the document but it may be possible with Google translate to at least help you ask the garage to try the routines before they get carried away changing bits unnecessarily.

Sorry to hear of your woes. Get you and the vehicle home if needs be, as I wouldn’t let the garage touch it. Do you have recovery while out their, if not I’d pay to get it home as it’ll probably be cheaper in the long run.

If they’ve already mentioned it needs a replacement engine, then this shows that they don’t know what they’re talking about.

Good luck.

You could phone Camperserv and speak to them, they are near Loule on the N125. There is also a garage I think called English motor mechanic, try googling it.

I am sorry about your issues. A while back on here, someone else had a major issue in France. In the end paid to repatriate their vehicle, but of course you are further away from the UK. If you do decide to investigate that option, the person they used and recommended was Derek Crouch and his mobile was 07813 622544. I did look the firm up and they seemed quite substantial recovery people.

The only other suggestion I can make relates to a firm called Adams Morey in Portsmouth whose manager Simon Potter seems to be very knowledgeable about Comfortmatic gearboxes - if indeed that is the issue. Their number is 023 9269 1122 and his email is simon.potter@adamsmorey.com. His advice would in my view be reliable. There is a thread on here about Comfortmatic issues and I think all who have dealt with Simon feel he is reliable but like all large firms, their rates are not cheap.

I do hope you can make progress. There are many technically competent and expert folk on here who will comment I am sure.

Sounds like the clutch to me not engaging/disengaging. Often caused by contaminated clutch fluid & the slave cylinder fails. Fairly common if the clutch fluid has not been changed regularly (every two years).

Really needs a good Fiat Professional garage that understands the Comfomatic, there are only a few of them in the UK.

May just be the slave cylinder but still expensive, not sure if the engine has to come out or they can do it by just taking off the bell housing.
Most people when they have the slave cylinder replaced useally fit a new clutch and DMF at the same time so it can cost a few grand, engine has to come out for that.

Hope you get sorted, your best option would be to get it back to the UK and to someone who understands the Comfomatic like Adams Morey at Portsmouth.

Thank you Lenny for your response. The thought of driving all the way back to France and back to the UK is just horrible (I only left on the 10th of October) yet, the idea of a garage here causing more trouble than I need is a nightmare too.

Hi David, thank you so much for your response and advice which is really helpful. I will definitely try to call Simon (although it is the weekend) and get some advice.

As others have said it sounds like the clutch or gearbox rather than the engine.

I think MSCARS have the Fiat concession in Faro. If you decide to have it fixed there it may be good to use them, unless you have a solid recommendation for someone else.

Those sorts of gearboxes can sometimes fool even the main dealers - I had an Iveco with similar and a big dealership near London made some almost comical (but expensive) errors in diagnosing a problem I had until I went to a smaller crowd who identified the cause.

Had it been auto electrical I would have recommended a good guy local to you - for this, if you’re going to have it seen to locally, I’d probably stay with the concessionaires.

Good luck.

If it is of some help, we had a stone go through the radiator en route to Armaçao de Pera. We booked into the campsite just on the edge of the town. I don’t recall the actual name of the campsite but it has a motorhome service and repair facility on-site.
As it happens, the repair facility was so busy that they couldn’t look at the van for a few days but they did recommend a garage a few miles away at Alcantarilha.

That garage was excellent and they sorted out the problem (new radiator and water pump) and let us stay in the van for two days whilst they removed the engine, ordered snd fitted the parts.

I know your problem is with the gearbox and/or clutch but it may be worth speaking firstly to the campsite at Armaçao de Pera about their facility and, if no joy, the garage at Alcantarilha.

Good luck!

Good luck, hope it can be fixed easily, we were away with friends who had a near identical issue, following day started and ran without any issue

It did eventually need a gearbox rebuild but they did many miles after your symptoms first started

Have you been moved back on to a pitch at least? Blocking the dump area would not be a nice place to wait for help

Good shout… It’s called camping technik Algarve. Www.camping-technik-algarve.com

Well worth a call. They were not busy a couple of weeks ago when we were there, or didn’t appear to be!

Thank you so much for your feedback. Can you remember who the garage was, as I have been recommended GV Garagem Vieria at EN125 - 8365-011 Alcantarilha.

I think that’s the one. And when in Alcantarilha, find time to go for lunch at this restaurant. Best meal i’ve ever had!

I'm still parked at the dump area and am being upbeat as I have ensuite facilities :) It still won't start today, so I am waiting until Monday when I will be taken to the Fiat garage. At least the campsite is very cheap and has really good facilities.

It should be, do they have a nightly rate for the grey waste dump ?
Good luck getting sorted out, at least you're not at the side of the road or vehicle compound 👍

Hi Julie S👋 ,
As other funsters have said this is a gearbox problem and not an engine one I have a friend in Portsmouth who used to take his Bolero to Adams Morey and he always praised Simon, so it would be well worth contacting him for his advice, as I personally think the same as Lenny said, that it might just be a gearbox Fluid contamination issue,
and a fluid change might just sort the problem and I would be inclined to take that option first before embarking on Major trial and error work, Camperserv has been mentioned who are only a few miles away from you but I can say from previous experience that he is also very expensive, also the English speaking Mechanic is also very expensive, he "repaired" friends of ours
van last winter in Albufeira and strung the job of replacing all the injectors out over 5 weeks but only coming to the site to work on it for 1day a week the bill was £2.5K I kid you not, so despite the fact that the Fiat main dealer is expensive it will probably be the cheapest option in the long run, Speak to Adams Morey and see if Simon can shed some light on your problem. If he advises you to try and get repatriated it may be a better option, Really sorry for the long negative post but just sayin it as it is, Good Luck. 👍

We have been staying with friends in South Portugal who gave us the name of a motorhome place in Loulé. We can’t vouch for them but were hoping to pop in there tomorrow. Attached is their name and address. It might be worth a call. Good luck. Marleen and Mike.

You may need to reset the gearbox as they lose there memory ( for different reasons ) I will try to attach the procedure file if i can’t type into google search fiat comfomatic gearbox and it should show up a listing from motor home facts page and the pdf file is available as a down load from there hope this helps
