or stay at Longhazel Camp Site on the A303 at Sparksford.
Which is what we do.

It's an hour and a half from Plymouth, pub next door that does good food and Maccy D's just down the road if you dont want good food!
Plus several things to do in the immediate area if you arrive early.

Portsmouth, it says 4½ hours before departure, we were there 4 hours before a 23:30 sailing earlier this week and it was already full so I suspect much earlier.
We stay on the Port Solent car park which is 10 minutes away and have a meal before going to the ferry. We also overnight there when returning you just need to phone security to give them your registration number when you arrive. Plenty of eating establishments including a Wetherspoons also a cinema.

or, in heavy traffic.
A303
A372
A378/A358
And join the M5 at exit 25

My parents and sisters all lived in Cornwall, up until last year we were doing the London/Cornwall trip every 6 weeks or so.
My motorhome could practically drive itself there it's done it that often.

I also know many of the side routes to avoid traffic, so I normally aim for the A303 route west, as there are more options to dive off the road and not be trapped on the M4/M5.
I've spent too many hours in the fast lane of the M5 around Bristol on a Friday night with the handbrake on and/or the engine switched off.

We were at Portsmouth a good 8 hrs before sailing 8 weeks ago and no problem with us parking there. There were a few vehicles ahead of us too.
