Yes Bovril, which I am partial to, both as a spread and as a hot drink.

Would any kind members, when out in the supermarket in Germany or France please keep a lookout for 250 mg jars. If spotted the price should be about €10 - yes I know twice Tesco UK price of £4.55.

We can order it on internet in Polaand, but it is at least £10 plus more than that for P&P. So I would prefer to pick some up on tour this summer. Please advise which S/Market chain, where and price.

TIA

Geoff

[NB I shall report anyone who mentions Marmite/Vegamite!]

I'm sorry, I missed this request first time around. I'll be shopping tomorrow so will look in my local Intermarché. I will go and add it to my shopping list.

Hi, Geoff, should that not be 250g? Mg would be very small!
Cheers, Dave

Of no help to the OP but for info. whenever we travel to Vietnam to visit family we always take Beefy from Morrisons. Identical to Bovril but significantly cheaper.

The catering tubs of Bovril drink are gluten-free. The individual cups ( vending machine used?) are not.

Australian Bone Broth is pretty good as well but don't expect a beef drink as it's a cream colour and tastes like drinking warm cream.

Yes, but I spotted the error when it was too late to edit.

I had been writing out my repeat prescription tablets just before posting, so Mg was in my head.

I'm sorry nicholsong , but I couldn't see any on the shelves. However, there were quite a number of voids in the "overseas" products secteur, so I have put Bovril back on my shopping list for next week.

How much do you want?

Postage from the UK wouldn't be significantly cheaper for just one or two jars, but if you got a bulk lot (1-2kg or more) then it starts to make economic sense.

It keeps forever so even if you don't use a lot of it then you should be OK for a while. if you happened to know anyone in the UK who was happy to pop into Tesco and then nip down the post office for you then....

Never without Bovril in the house.
Often wondered why OXO have never done similar in a jar. Well not to my knowledge.
Can't help re Euro shops as not going, well but for Bulgaria.

It’s a part of my supper ritual between 10 and 10:30 , cup of bovril ( liberal dash of white pepper ) and a buttered crumpet ! 👍💡

I put Tabasco and freshly ground black pepper in my Bovril for a lunchtime “snack” when at work in college. Yummy!

I can ask Martin to get some for you and post on should you wish.

I'm not sure if the jars are glass or plastic these days, obviously plastic would be less weight and cheaper to post.

Thanks both for the offers.

One 250g jar is 450g so 6 would be getting on for 3kg, so I have no idea what would be the postage, then there is the customs problem coming from non-EU - they want an agent to clear nearly everything, even if no duty payable.

I posted my OP in the hope that I could pick up some jars while on our trip through Germany to France later this year.

Hmm... I see the problem.

A quick troll around the internet suggests that you may have some luck with Comptoir Irlandais which have stores all over France and list the 125g jars on their website for €4.55 and they have a stock checker online too so you should be able to avoid disappointment.

Alternatively maybe look at Amazon.fr or Amazon.de and see if you can get some delivered to an Amazon locker of your choice?

nicholsong. Well, none in our local Intermarché and no label on the shelf to suggest it is ever there. However, it is only a relatively small store. I am expecting to be in Limoges before long so will check in the nearby Carrefour, which is alongside the A20.

I've just checked, and you can buy it through The British Shop in Warsaw at zł49.00 + zł15.00 delivery to a shipping locker (DPD or similar) for a 250g jar.

John

Edit : - Bovril can be bought through Amazon.fr so can also be delivered to an Amazon Locker

Thanks, that is just the sort of information I was looking for, and that is approx the UK price, instead of the on-line stores which want 4x that price PLUS delivery.

I would never have found it as I did not know the name of that group of shops.

I seem to remember OXO spread, in a jar like Bovril, in the late 50s and early 60s
This was the era of strange foodstuffs; Ovaltine and Horlicks, malt and rennet to name but a few……..🫢

My pleasure Geoff, glad to have been of help.

I will just add that those are the small 125g jars and not the 250g ones, so the cost saving isn't going to be quite as good as you hoped but it should still be worthwhile if you stock up with a few.

If ever you get this far south Geoff, I am sure ex-pat stores would have it...we dont very often frequent these places, but I know they are in popular areas.

Thanks again. I had missed the size because I had assumed that 250g was their smallest size, 125g is tiny.
