Hi all,
Stupid question alert but I thought I'd ask. Our brand new van, which we're very excited about, is due at the dealers in April. Where we are in the SE a lot of the storage is full. We have found somewhere where we can reserve a space but we'd need to start paying now. 80 pcm
Given we have few other options, that seems to be what we will need to do or risk not having anywhere, especially when other people get Spring vans. We can afford it and its not masses against the cost of the van but is still a lot for nothing before we park there.
Any words of wisdom or thoughts of what you'd do?

Get it booked ASAP!
You have stated you can afford it, and that spaces like these are in short supply locally to you, so when you get your shiny new van you will have piece of mind of where it is going immediately, and no sleepless nights of where to store it.
£80pcm, if it helps is easily broken down into only £2.64 per day for a whole 365 days for piece of mind.
And with a brand new van of ,I would guess, c.50k plus, it's a no brainer to get this done soonest, in my opinion.

4 x 80 = 320 against ££££££000's you've paid for your New Kit ......No Brainer 👍But don't let the Mice get at it

We were in a similar position last year. We looked at a site that had 4 spaces available that we were going to use but we didn't actually sign up. A week before we were due to pick up our MH I tried to book with them but there were no spaces available. It was a worrying two days ringing round before we found another place.

I'm glad I'm not in the SE though as we are paying nowhere near £80 per month.

Similar for us when we were about to purchase (few years back) one space became available months before we had the van but it was’pay up or lose it’ we payed up ,three month later picked up van.

I really do sympathise with anyone that needs storage for their van.
And I do appreciate their concerns over storage sites.. and that circumstances may make it impossible to store at home.
However the last 3 properties we have viewed and successfully purchased, the no.1 priority was.... Is there parking for our c'van and later our moho.. If not then we would not have purchased property..

Should of added to my post above that after experimentation we found our van just fitted on our drive (7.4m ,7.5 would of been too long) so we informed the insurance company and now store it there 👍

Right decision to book it now. We kept ours, empty, for 16 months when we were waiting for our new van to arrive and don’t regret it. Nothing like your charges though even for a Casoa Gold

Personally I wouldn’t want my van stored at home. I’m happy to bring it home for charging setting off etc as it’s only 0.5’ away but wouldn’t want it here permanently

In fairness I should have said 200 per quarter so more like 70 a month. Cassoa gold site. Some are asking (and getting) a lot more down here. Easy money for them who have then sites

Secured our storage when looking for our first van. It was a year later before we purchased. But at least when we bought it we knew we had somewhere to store it.

Mind you it is only £360 a year and CASOA platinum status.

Priorities change

When I bought my property, consideration of possibly having to park a motorhome would never have entered my mind.

We had to pay before we got our van for similar reasons.

We got an invite from the other local place (which was full) about 5 months after we needed it (ie it took 5 months to even get an email/phone call back from the other local Storage site). They were known to be full from their website so this wasn't a surprise.

Van doesn't really fit on our drive for more than temporary loading so we had no hoice to prepay for a space at the only storage site available.

Pay your money reserve your spot. Theres now a waiting list of 2 years for the storage I use.

Should add mine is about same per month for Cassoa Silver only that you been quoted, it's a fair rate.

24/7 access, cctv and both automated gates and some manual ones to get past to get to the van. Likely getting gold/platinum next year and we all expect the rates to increase.

I'm also a fan of using storage so the neighbours don't know when you out. It's bloody obvious your house is empty if your van is permnantly on the drive when you at home/occupying the property (so it's obvious to a thief when you not when the van is gone).

I have this image of a family of mice, sat patiently on the empty pitch, waiting for their new home to be delivered!
It happens , used to store our Eldiss in a Compound but was always going over to check on it for the little Critters .

In our experience from now (2) years of storage and mice arriving once, it happens if you don't visit about once a month.

We just use the van (even in winter) every 3rd week so it really doesn't become an issue. The Jan-March period is our least period of use. If you use the van reguarly in December (as we do) the mice tend to prefer the other (non moving vans) to yours ... we could be imagining this, but speaking with our neighbours on the storage site the ones who moved least had the most problems.

Once sorted you can forget about it, if you couldn't afford a month or so storage I wouldn't bother with motorhome.

Agree with all the posts here. We secured a space last April & took delivery of new van late June.

As for mice, none in the van but they're in our garage eating raw potatoes. OH has caught 5 in 3 days.

Take it!

Many years ago (2010-2011) I kept my motorhome in a large storage place. At the time I could get it in without too much difficulty. They now have a waiting list of 400 that they say could take 4-5 years to clear.

Totally agree with booking it. We are in the SE and really struggled to get a CaSSOA Gold (required by our insurer) storage site and ended up very luckily getting a space in our current one after the owner moved someone to a smaller space so we could fit our 8m motorhome, which they were happy with. Without this stroke of luck we were really struggling.

As with other posts here, grab it whilst you can. We bought our first ( and so far only) motorhome two years ago. Two weeks before we bought it we had never even considered owning a campervan let alone a motorhome (I wouldn't recommend that as the right way to buy one!). Two days before we were due to collect I suddenly realised, much to my shame and horror, that there was no way it was going on the driveway. We could accommodate it's width and length easily enough but my car exhaust catches if I don't approach it at an angle (the driveway goes up and over), and I realised there was no way the almost 1.5mt of overhang was going to make it. Cue panic and lots of Internet searching. Eventually I found one less than 5 miles away. When I called them I was told they had no more spaces for our 7mt length. Gutted, I was about to put the phone down when the owner asked if I wanted a 9mt space, albeit another £12/Month. I bit his hand off. When we eventually downsize and take retirement, one of the must have will be a driveway big enough for the van, because no matter how useful it is to have storage nearby, it's still not as convenient as having your van outside the door.

Paul, must be Hemel Hempstead - I was told 5 years on the waiting list there a few months ago - ended up at Henlow

Our house has plenty of room for the motorhome, but no access. We had thought of access from the main road when the council filled in the underpass, but they A planted trees B moved the bus stop to where we would have needed the runway.
storage is down a farm road but access is good. contemplated moving to a newly opened one when they were touting for custom
Fees seemed good, till you looked at the 'extras' opening times very limited, if you wanted access outwith those hours, something like 10 am to 4pm it was £60 a time. No work at all to be done on the vehicles within the facility, so no new battery if it goes while on site arrangements could possibly be made, yes you've guessed another £60 anything not between those hours was an extra £60 it is also further from home and we felt the access onto a busy A road and fairly concealed was not safe.
stayed where we are. Entry times are better, late off ferry? A quick text to notify company and they know why the CCTV is alarming. Problem with the electrics, meet the repair guy at the site. Even had one valeted on site, brought their own water.
When we first were getting a motorhome we contacted them, they were willing to hold the space for a month for us, no chance of that now.
So yes book and pay now.

We are fortunate to have plenty of storage at home but I did end up paying another years insurance prenium to keep our history and ncb intact when we'd sold our existing van and our new one kept getting delayed due to the impact of lockdowns etc.
