I'm not exactly a newbie here having owned a van for 3 years. We've travelled Europe twice, and Ireland for a month this year. I have read about having to pre book sites in England, not a requirement in Scotland (as far as I know).

Is this really necessary ? we don't do Englandshire very much unless just passing through. We are not members of any club, and use CamperContact and other site finder apps on our phone, and have not really had any problems so far.

Popular sites in peak season definitely need booking. Depends where you want to be.
I find camper contact useless in UK but search for sites and park4 night work well.

Depends on the site. So as not to loose their deposit, i think campers have to cancel no later than 5 days of arrival date.
So if you phone up then, specially for busy sites. Odds on, there will be a cancellation.
Or else go on a cancellation list if full.
This is how I got onto Bristol and York sites, which are always full.

We travel around the UK to visit family regularly and usually the only choice we have is to stay on a campsite nearby. It is generally necessary to book ahead, campsites don’t seem to be able to cope with people just wanting to turn up!
Brit Stops ( if you can find a good one) usually need to know when you will be arriving too.

We don't book anywhere, unless we need to be in a specific location at a specific time, either UK or abroad. In almost 10 years of motorhoming we've never had a problem, although there has been the odd occasion when we couldn't get on our first choice. By first choice, I mean the one we look at first when we decide it's time to stop! We do sometimes research an area beforehand, but only to see if there's anything we particularly like or dislike. Or don't take dogs.

We did overnight in a lay-by once, but that was because we couldn't be bothered to move on and it was nice and quiet and out of the way.

Caravan and camping club have lots of THS's, temporary holiday sites. They are cheap and cheerful, field, tap, dump and that's usually it but in some lovely spots but you do need to be a member.

I think for club sites in popular locations at a bank holiday weekend you need to book otherwise if you are flexible just phone on the day and if full try another there will always be somewhere. A lot depends on if you want nice showers etc we always use our own so happy with most places.
