Hi

Away in France for last 6 weeks boiler been fine hot water use only.

Today at Aire put boiler on to do dishes and it went through boost cycle to start up..
Within 3 or 4 minutes we both could smell hot caramelised smell!! in the van and outside at Truma vent..

Turned it off removed internal cover but all smelt ok and looked ok, so started it back up and smell was there again, this time outside at vent with my hand over it it seems hot. BUT i've never held my hand near the Truma vent before so it could always be hot fumes...

So do I run the cycle and get hot water or just leave it off???

We are away for another two weeks and she will definitely need a wash in that time!!!

Thanks for help

Oisin

personally I'd find a dealer to have a good look at it, stating the obvious I know, but you can't afford to mess with it.
Good luck with it.

Hi the ex gas man,
No colour with the fumes or any sign of smoke outside,

Dealer would people go here in France or wait till home?

We both joked that it could be dam stink/shield bug getting toasted!!

Thanks for help

May be the high temp stat has failed. Water leak gets you wet, electric leak gets you hot and bothered, gas leak make you a rival to starling? Please exercise caution.

Not likely to be a combustion fault if it's not smoking so as scotjimland suggests it may be a wiring or pcb fault. I would try to have it looked at before using it, if you do use it keep an eye on it and don't leave it unattended. Can you try it on electricity?

Our Truma occasionally smells when set to hot water only (no heating). I would call it a smell like hot bakelite.
Ring the technical people at Truma UK for peace of mind, they said not to worry about it if it was only when it was set to hot water only.

Same with mine, not a pleasant smell at all, has done it from new, thought it was because it was new, but 2 years on and it still does it, seems to be just when in "Hot" water mode. I wonder if it is because the heater fan is not running as when it is in heating mode, may be this keeps the operating temperature of the boiler down and hence no smell. 🤷‍♂️

Wet n wild Breton morning...

Called UK Truma yesterday afternoon.
Saying if PCB,Wiring or electrical fault the boiler would shut down and would not start up again. This would then show as a fault code on screen.
To be able to diagnose problem without fault code they would re-start system and let it run full heat cycle. So advice was to proceed ourselves or contact local gas engineer(got details from campsite) and run full cycle.

This morning engineer turned up he agrees with Truma advice...

First cycle it smelt hot and engineer said it need to be cleaned as not been used!! been away for 6weeks so it's been used.
We used the hot water then ran anther cycle this time very faint smell but all good, he's saying the smell inside as others have suggested because we never use gas heating(rubbish in this van) the boiler housing is getting hot and baked, had this van for coming up 3years and never used its gas heating after one cold trip to Outer Hebrides...diesel heater fitted.
maybe we just got bit paranoid of smell the other day and once we smelt it that's all we could smell,,will get it fully checked once home

Thank you to everyones input and help

Enjoy your day
