Blade fuse marked E

Hi, my inet x has a blade fuse marked with an E in the 12v fuse board in our van. We are away for the weekend in Melrose and it’s been sub zero since we arrived. Van was v cold, got the diesel heater on which then allowed the pump to work and got water ok. However my inet x fuse, not on the panel but in the 12v fuse board, blew 3 times, it’s a resettable fuse so got it going again ok with a spare.

Questions, what does E mean on a fuse? I understand my inet panel is 3amp? It’s all been working fine now for a few hours but I’ve got a bit of a worry about why it blew, could it just have been the cold and damp?

Also are Halfords ok to buy blade fuses from re quality?

Halfords, Amazon, eBay all OK to buy from. If it does keep blowing though you need to investigate the cause.

Well, what a twit I am, I was sure that was an E, appointment now made with specsavers! 😀😀

Definitely a 3 amp fuse. Blade fuses are colour coded.
  • Black: 1A
  • Grey: 2A
  • Violet: 3A
  • Pink: 4A
  • Tan: 5A
  • Brown: 7.5A
  • Red: 10A
  • Blue: 15A
  • Yellow: 20A
  • Clear: 25A
  • Green: 30A
  • Orange: 40A.
Might be worthwhile having a printed copy of this in your instruction manual, assuming you still have one, and keeping it in the wiring diagram section.

Regarding how it fails, this looks like something to do with a battery to battery connection, leisure to vehicle? Might be something to do with charging? If the fuse fails as soon as it’s installed it’s very likely to be a “dead short”- +ve to -ve being in contact with each other. If it takes a consistent amount of time between installation and failure, say 3-4 minutes to up to say 10 minutes then i would speculate that the fuse is being overloaded, a fuse of this type has a fuse rating of 2, this means it will fail at ROUGHLY 2x3A=6A. This could be because it’s very cold at the moment and something is taking an unusually large current draw. If you install it and it’s fine for, say half an hour, and then fails, try to check what has switched on that has overloaded the fuse and caused it to fail, maybe a charging cycle for the batteries above?
In any event make sure you replace the fuse with a decent quality one from a reputable retailer, Halfrauds, or a multi-outlet motor factor like Europarts, this is yet another item that the Chinese manufacture to a less than European standard.
If in doubt consult an auto electrician, if there is an issue with a battery, then worst case scenario is flammable!
