On and off for many years.
I am in discussion with a local organisation about using their unused car park for a rally in 2017. One question that has come up is disposal of black/grey waste and they are asking if it would be okay to open a manhole at a specified time and if permission would be needed from someone (I'm guessing SEPA in Scotland) to allow this.

Anyone know? What normally happens?

Why would you need permission if it's a foul sewer cover your lifting and emptying into ?
Surely it's just the same as all other stuff in there doing what it's designed for.

Manholes are often used at rallies we've been to. There are normally handles or keys to allow people to lift the cover when they need to rather than expect everyone to use it at a specified time.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I have now answered the questions asked by the landowner.

The Monkey Hanger meet in Hartlepool used a lifted manhole just outside the "car" parking area.... It was on an area of footpath.... And was coned off with barriers to stop the public from "falling" innit!...

There is another option, actually 2 if you include the "nuclear" option.

One is nobody eats, 2 days before the Rally and during also.

The Nuclear option is a large Cork and a wire strop and turn buckle to bowse the cheeks in (forciablly clench tightly)

Just saying!

We stayed on a THS and the farmer just parked up his muckspreader, everything was tipped into that

if theres no mains drainage on site some portaloo companies have tanks for the black and for grey

We were at Monkey Hangers Rally too. I believe @makems arranged with local council to use the drain for a fee.

A group emptying would be pleasant wouldn't it?

"Right everyone, at 10.30 am in the morning meet at main manhole for black waste emptying, you might want to delay your breakfast"

We had to do that once with the Autosleeper Owners Club ... we were pitched on Shoreham airfield for the airshow and the wc dump was otherside of the runway.

Every evening we had to gather, with cassettes in hand, awaiting confirmation that flying had finished for the day and runway was clear ... only then could we proceed in line across the strip, being escorted by a man in full flourecent kit.

At the Monkey Hangers Rally I arranged directly with Northunbrian Wate who are in charge of waste locally which manhole could be used. There was no charge.
However fresh water came from the separate Hartlepool Water Company which charged an extortionate fee to come and install and remove the standpipe and also charged for water used.

Whilst touring Scotland I called in at a Visitor Centre and asked if I could empty into their loos (carefully, of course).

"They're not ours" was the reply.

"So you don't mind" I said.

Oh yes they did.

HOWEVER, they did issue me with a leaflet advising me to dig a hole in the ground and bury it. Could be a problem if you are parked on concrete!
